Job summary

Accountants One, Inc. is assisting a growing construction company by hiring a hands-on Controller who will lead the day-to-day accounting function. The role reports to the CFO and serves as the primary accounting resource to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.

The successful candidate will own the full accounting cycle, manage job costing and WIP, supervise AP/AR and billing, and work closely with project managers to optimize margins and strengthen internal controls.

Qualifications

• Construction industry accounting experience is required.
• Experience with percentage-of-completion and revenue recognition.
• Ability to manage the full accounting cycle independently.

Responsibilities

• Own the full accounting cycle including general ledger and month-end close.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and management reporting.
• Manage job costing and ensure costs are allocated to projects.
• Prepare WIP schedules and revenue recognition calculations.
• Monitor project profitability, budgets, and cost-to-complete estimates.
• Coordinate with project managers and operations on financial performance.
• Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing.
• Assist CFO with cash flow forecasting and budgeting.
• Coordinate with external CPAs for year-end reporting and taxes.
• Identify process improvements and strengthen internal controls.

Job description

Accountants One was hired by a new client to help them hire a hands-on Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting function for a growing construction company. Reporting directly to the CFO, this individual will serve as the primary accounting resource for the organization and will be responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of the company’s financial reporting.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced construction accounting professional who enjoys owning the accounting process from beginning to end. The right candidate will be comfortable operating at both the Controller level and in the details of daily accounting.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the full accounting cycle, including general ledger, journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close
• Prepare monthly financial statements and management reporting
• Manage construction job costing, ensuring costs are accurately captured and allocated to individual projects
• Prepare and maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and related percentage-of-completion/revenue recognition calculations
• Monitor project profitability, budgets, committed costs, change orders, and cost-to-complete estimates
• Partner with project managers and operations to review job performance and identify cost or margin issues
• Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, and cash application
• Prepare construction-related billings, including progress billings and retainage
• Perform cash management and assist the CFO with cash flow forecasting
• Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure appropriate accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Coordinate with external CPA firms for year-end financial reporting and tax requirements
• Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis
• Provide financial information and analysis to the CFO and company leadership
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and financial controls

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
• Construction industry accounting experience required
• Strong knowledge of job costing and WIP accounting required
• Experience with percentage-of-completion/revenue recognition and construction project accounting
• Strong understanding of GAAP and full-cycle accounting
• Ability to independently manage the accounting function in a lean environment
• Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting/ERP systems
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities
• Comfortable working directly with project managers, operations leaders, and executive management
