Job Summary:
The Controller plays a critical role in the stewardship and financial leadership of the organization’s resources, supporting the mission and values of Lutheran Hour Ministries. This position is responsible for managing daily accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting and overseeing internal controls.
Performs his/her duties consistent with the LHM and Ministry Services plans, strategic plans, policies, and other guidelines, and within applicable law.
Major Responsibilities:
Month-End Close & Financial Reporting
- Oversee and review all monthly financial close activities, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports.
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
Audit & Compliance
- Provide direct oversight of all aspects of the annual audit process, including preparation of schedules, documentation, and coordination with external auditors.
- Lead the preparation and review of annual expense allocations, IRS Form 990-T, and other regulatory filings.
- Maintain compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and organizational policies.
- Design, implement and monitor robust internal accounting controls
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Coordinate the organization-wide annual budgeting process, including the development of templates, guidance for departments, consolidation of budgets, and preparation of final documentation for board approval.
- Track variances between actuals to budget and forecasts by department to facilitate decisions.
Systems & Technology
- Own and master the finance and accounting technology – systems/software, including upgrades, user setup, permissions, and processing.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to financial systems and processes to increase efficiency and security.
Operational Accounting
- Oversee daily accounting activity including general ledger, purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, payroll and cash processing.
Leadership
- Lead the Finance and Accounting team to include goal setting, performance review, coaching, training and development.
- Manage resource allocation, cross training and segregation of duties to balance efficiency with internal controls.
- Partner with various leaders on contract review, accounting treatment/outcomes, projects, modeling, metric tracking etc.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
12+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
- Advanced understanding of technical accounting, core accounting best practices and financial statements.
- Experience with budgets and forecasting.
- Experience with operational accounting to includes some combination of AR, AP, payroll, Fixed Assets and General Ledger.
- Strong strategic, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
Working knowledge of international and/or nonprofit accounting standards.
- Commitment to the mission and values of LHM
- Demonstrated experience with ERP and financial systems, particularly Sage Intacct and Salesforce
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree
- CPA
- Experience with data management
- Experience with system implementations
- Experience with International banking regulations
Location:
The candidate will be willing to work in a hybrid environment and maintain residence in the St. Louis, MO area.
