Job description

A Northern VA commercial construction subcontractor is seeking a full-time Controller to join our team on-site at our Manassas, VA location. The Controller is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the company and ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with construction industry accounting practices. This role supports operational leadership by maintaining accurate job cost reporting, monitoring project financial performance, and delivering timely financial information for decision‑making.

The Controller supervises the Accounts Payable function and works closely with estimating, project management, and field operations to ensure accurate cost tracking, proper job setup, and clear financial visibility into project performance. The position also supports the Vice President of Finance in managing working capital, financial reporting, and banking relationships.

Core Responsibilities
  • Oversee all accounting operations including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, job cost accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Supervise the Accounts Payable Specialist to ensure timely processing of vendor invoices, subcontractor payments, lien releases, and accurate job cost coding.
  • Oversee the accounts receivable function including customer billing, collections, account reconciliations, and monitoring of aging balances.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of project billings and coordinate with project management regarding billing status and collections.
  • Maintain and monitor the job cost accounting system to ensure project costs are recorded accurately by job, phase, and cost code.
  • Review project cost reports and work with project managers to identify cost variances, budget overruns, and cost coding issues.
  • Ensure proper allocation of labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and overhead to projects.
  • Manage the monthly and year‑end close process including preparation and review of financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Prepare and maintain Work in Progress (WIP) schedules including revenue recognition, underbillings and overbillings, and coordination with project management for accurate cost‑to‑complete estimates.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, job cost reports, and subledgers to ensure the accuracy of financial records.
  • Manage daily cash activity including monitoring balances and overseeing ACH and electronic payment activity.
  • Maintain proper controls over cash disbursements, ACH payments, wire transfers, and banking access.
  • Monitor working capital needs related to project cash flow, vendor payments, and operating expenses.
  • Oversee vendor account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies involving purchase orders, invoices, contracts, and payments.
  • Manage fixed assets and construction equipment accounting from acquisition through disposal, including capitalization, depreciation, tracking, and retirement.
  • Maintain accurate records for equipment purchases and disposals and ensure appropriate cost allocation to projects and departments.
  • Oversee company fleet administration including vehicle registrations, regulatory compliance, and licensing requirements such as IFTA reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with financial requirements including sales and use tax reporting, annual 1099 preparation, and vendor documentation.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and banking partners as required.
  • Support the Vice President of Finance in preparing financial reporting required by lenders and banking partners including financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis related to company operations and project performance.
  • Protect the organization’s financial integrity by maintaining confidentiality and enforcing sound internal controls.

  • Support project management and operations teams with financial reporting related to job performance, cost trends, and margin analysis.
  • Assist in improving financial processes related to job setup, cost coding, billing, and project reporting.
  • Help develop financial controls and procedures that support scalable growth of the organization.
  • Participate in coordination with estimating and operations to improve bid‑to‑project financial tracking and margin analysis.
  • Provide financial insights to leadership regarding project profitability, backlog performance, and operational trends.
  • Support cash flow planning related to project billing cycles, collections, vendor payments, and operational expenditures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting and job cost accounting.
  • Experience in a project‑based construction environment, preferably with a subcontractor.
  • Proficiency with construction ERP systems such as Vista, Trimble Construction One, or similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding of cost codes, job budgets, committed costs, and project cost tracking.
  • Knowledge of Work in Progress (WIP) reporting and percentage‑of‑completion revenue recognition.
  • Understanding of construction financial statements and lender reporting requirements.
  • Experience supervising accounting staff.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze job cost data and identify financial trends.
  • Strong communication skills with both financial and operational personnel.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial reporting tools.
