As we continue to grow, we are seeking a Controller who will serve as a key member of our leadership team and help build the financial and operational foundation for the next stage of growth.
Your Role
The Controller is responsible for the financial management and administrative operations of Rooted Landscape. This role oversees accounting, payroll, purchasing, inventory, fleet administration, technology systems, risk management, and financial reporting while providing strategic support to ownership and department leaders.
The ideal candidate is a highly organized leader who enjoys both financial stewardship and operational excellence. This person will help drive profitability, improve processes, support department managers, and ensure the company has accurate information to make sound business decisions.
Responsibilities
- Financial Management & Reporting
- Lead all accounting functions including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Banking, and General Ledger.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes.
- Develop annual budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
- Monitor company financial performance and provide actionable recommendations.
- Analyze profitability by division, department, crew, and project.
- Oversee job costing and work-in-progress reporting.
- Track and report key financial and operational KPIs.
- Manage banking relationships, lines of credit, and financing arrangements.
- Coordinate with external CPA firms, tax professionals, and auditors.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable tax regulations.
- Purchasing & Procurement
- Oversee purchasing processes across all divisions.
- Review and approve vendor invoices and purchase requests.
- Develop strong vendor relationships and negotiate favorable pricing.
- Monitor inventory levels and purchasing trends.
- Ensure materials are ordered, staged, and available for upcoming projects.
- Implement purchasing controls and accountability measures.
- Fleet, Equipment & Asset Management
- Oversee company fleet including trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, and small equipment.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules and repair tracking.
- Monitor fleet utilization, operating costs, fuel consumption, and replacement planning.
- Manage vehicle registrations, licensing, and compliance requirements.
- Assist in evaluating and purchasing equipment and capital assets.
- Develop long-term fleet replacement strategies.
- Technology & Administrative Operations
- Oversee company technology systems, software platforms, and vendor relationships.
- Assist with implementation and optimization of business software including BossLM, CRM systems, and other operational tools.
- Ensure proper data management, cybersecurity awareness, and system functionality.
- Develop and improve administrative processes and internal controls.
- Maintain accurate company records and documentation.
- Human Resources & Risk Management
- Oversee payroll processing and benefits administration.
- Assist ownership with compensation planning and workforce budgeting.
- Manage workers' compensation reporting and claims administration.
- Coordinate insurance renewals including general liability, commercial auto, property, and workers' compensation policies.
- Support onboarding, employee documentation, and compliance requirements.
- Assist leadership with performance metrics and accountability systems.
- Leadership & Strategic Planning
- Serve as a member of the Leadership Team.
- Participate in annual strategic planning and budgeting.
- Develop dashboards and scorecards that provide visibility into company performance.
- Provide department managers with meaningful financial and operational reporting.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, profitability, and scalability.
- Help create systems and processes that support long-term growth.
- Promote Rooted Landscape's core values and culture throughout the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- CPA or CMA preferred but not required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting, finance, or business management experience.
- Previous Controller, Accounting Manager, Finance Manager, or Operations Manager experience preferred.
- Experience within landscaping, construction, pool construction, field services, or related industries strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of financial statements, budgeting, cash flow management, and job costing.
- Experience managing purchasing, inventory, and operational processes.
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software, Excel, and business management systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of integrity, accountability, and attention to detail.
