Job summary

Springs Rescue Mission in Colorado Springs seeks a Controller to lead Steward Resources, owning the monthly close, financial reporting, and grant accounting to support our Christ-centered mission.

This is a hands-on, leadership role that requires nonprofit fund accounting experience, multi-entity accounting, and the ability to partner with program leaders and the CEO to steward resources effectively.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a controller, assistant controller, or senior accounting leadership role.
  • Nonprofit fund accounting experience.
  • Multi-entity accounting experience.
  • Direct experience owning an annual audit, including auditor relationship management, PBC list ownership, and findings resolution.
  • Hands-on general ledger, reconciliation, and month-end close experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Working proficiency in Sage Intacct or a comparable mid-market ERP system.

Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly close, reconciliations, and financial reporting for SRM and affiliates.
  • Manage restricted fund accounting and donor/grant reporting.
  • Oversee Greenway Flats property accounting and related reporting.
  • Lead cash management, forecasting, and debt tracking.

Springs Rescue Mission is a faith-based nonprofit in Colorado Springs serving people experiencing homelessness, addiction, and poverty. Our Movement Campus Model helps guests move toward belonging, purpose, and sustainable independence. The finance function supports this mission by ensuring that every dollar entrusted to SRM is stewarded with accuracy, integrity, and clarity. The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day accounting operations of Springs Rescue Mission and its affiliates. The Controller owns the monthly close, reconciliations, restricted fund accounting, cash management, financial reporting, and preparation for the annual audit. The Controller supervises the Staff Accountant and the Staff Bookkeeper and works directly with the CEO and leadership team. This role also connects with gift processing and Advancement to ensure revenue capture is complete and donor intent is honored. This is a hands‑on, operational leadership role. The Controller is actively engaged in the accounting system, closing the books on a consistent schedule, reconciling accounts, and resolving discrepancies. The Controller's work also goes beyond the close, serving as a financial partner to program directors, helping them understand their budgets and develop the financial fluency to steward their resources well. The Controller sits on SRM's leadership team and is a key enabler of the mission across the organization. Every dollar SRM stewards belongs to the people and donors who trust us. The Controller owns the accuracy and clarity that lets all leaders trust the numbers.

Requirements
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Monthly Close & Financial Reporting
  • Manage the monthly close process on a consistent, published schedule, with GL close completed by the 10th of every month
  • Perform and review general ledger reconciliations, subsidiary ledger accuracy, and trial balance sign-off
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and coding integrity
  • Prepare monthly financial reporting packages for the CEO, leadership team, and Finance Committee
  • Maintain close workpapers and documentation to support year-round audit readiness
Restricted Fund & Grant Accounting
  • Manage full‑cycle restricted fund accounting across a diverse portfolio of institutional and individual funders, each with distinct reporting and compliance requirements
  • Track donor‑designated and grant‑restricted gifts; maintain fund balance integrity
  • Prepare timely and accurate funder compliance reports
  • Coordinate with program staff on Employment First and other complex grant compliance requirements
  • Partner with Advancement on funder reporting and stewardship
Greenway Flats – Permanent Supportive Housing
  • Manage full‑cycle accounting for SRM's permanent supportive housing property
  • Coordinate tenant accounting activities with the Staff Bookkeeper
  • Oversee tenant accounts receivable, rent posting, and reconciliation to tenant ledgers
  • Coordinate compliance reporting with SRM's external compliance partner; ensure all required reporting to funding and regulatory partners is timely and audit‑ready
  • Maintain lease accounting documentation and property files
  • Oversee data integration between the Greenway system and Sage Intacct
  • Prepare monthly Greenway P&L reporting
Cash Management & Forecasting
  • Perform weekly bank and credit card reconciliations
  • Prepare weekly cash position reports for the CEO: cash on hand, outstanding AP, expected inflow, rolling 13‑week forecast
  • Verify debt payments and track loan obligations
  • Communicate cash risks to the CEO promptly
Financial Partnership & Leadership Development
  • Partner with program directors on budget understanding and variance analysis; help leaders develop financial fluency to steward their departments well
  • Translate accounting data into actionable information that supports informed resource decisions and stewardship across the organization
Annual Audit
  • Serve as the primary organizational owner of the annual financial audit
  • Manage the auditor relationship, PBC list, workpaper preparation, and findings resolution
  • Maintain audit‑ready records throughout the year
  • Coordinate with the external tax partner on Form 990 preparation
  • Compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filing requirements
Team Leadership & Systems
  • Supervise, coach, and develop the Staff Accountant and the Staff Bookkeeper
  • Establish and enforce accounting standards, controls, and expectations
  • Administer Sage Intacct; oversee Bill.com approval workflows
  • Develop and maintain written accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Coordinate ongoing partnerships with external accounting consultants

Attends all required meetings and reviews SRM emails regularly. Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Education/Experience
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a controller, assistant controller, or senior accounting leadership role
  • Nonprofit fund accounting experience
  • Multi‑entity accounting experience
  • Direct experience owning an annual audit, including auditor relationship management, PBC list ownership, and findings resolution
  • Hands‑on general ledger, reconciliation, and month‑end close experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Working proficiency in Sage Intacct or a comparable mid‑market ERP system
Preferred
  • CPA license
  • Experience with regulated or affordable housing accounting
  • Experience partnering with a development or advancement function
  • Experience leading finance functions through periods of rebuild or system implementation

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and accounting, payroll, donation, grant management, or related financial systems used by the organization.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and demonstrate integrity in handling sensitive financial and donor information.
Working Conditions/Physical Factors

Typical office working environment. This is not a remote or hybrid role.

Salary and benefits include: $90,000 - $120,000 (Exempt position)
