Job description

Description

The Controller is responsible for leading and executing the Bank’s day-to-day accounting operations. This role is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger, as well as subsidiary records that contribute to financial, regulatory, and management reporting. The Controller partners with leaders from all operational areas of the Bank to support the safeguard of financial integrity, support strategic initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability, compliance, and continuous improvement.

The Controller ensures compliance with all Bank policies and procedures, as well as applicable state and federal banking regulations. This is a hands‑on role – in addition to providing oversight and direction, the Controller is expected to participate in daily accounting operations, maintain working knowledge of all significant accounting processes, train and develop staff, identify process improvements, and provide operational support during employee absences or periods of increased workload.

The ideal candidate will bring a continuous improvement mindset and a demonstrated ability to enhance accounting operations by strengthening internal controls, standardizing documentation, improving operational workflows, and increasing organizational efficiency. This individual will proactively identify opportunities to improve structure, oversight, consistency, and audit readiness while maintaining a strong control environment and supporting the Bank’s long‑term strategic objectives.

Essential Functions:
  • Maintain ownership of the accuracy and integrity of the Bank’s general ledger, overseeing daily accounting operations, treasury activities, operational reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Lead the month-end and year-end general ledger closing processes, including reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts and income statement analysis to ensure timely, accurate financial reporting.
  • Develop, document, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to promote consistency, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Oversee accounts payable processes and related internal controls.
  • Maintain accounting controls and procedures supporting payroll processing and employee benefit administration.
  • Coordinate activities with external auditors, internal auditors, regulatory examiners, and other third‑party financial partners.
  • Maintain the Bank’s tax records and supporting documentation to facilitate timely, accurate, and compliant reporting to federal, state, and local taxing authorities, in coordination with the Bank’s external tax consultants.
  • Partner with department leaders to support operational initiatives, strategic projects, and process improvement efforts across the organization.
  • Support the preparation and submission of regulatory and financial reports.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen accounting processes, improve efficiency, mitigate risk, and enhance the overall control environment.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting; CPA designation preferred. Equivalent community banking accounting or public accounting experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience with a demonstrated record of designing, implementing, and maintaining effective internal controls related to the general ledger and disparate sources of subsidiary information; preferably within a community bank or other financial institution.
  • Experience leveraging Microsoft 365 to improve organization, accessibility, and governance of accounting records, policies, procedures, and internal control documentation. A demonstrated willingness to champion continuous process improvement and workflow optimization is necessary.
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills with strong attention to detail and logical hierarchy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and communicate with senior leadership, auditors, regulators, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to mentor staff, foster accountability, and build a high‑performing accounting function.
