Project Overview

Bechtel is the licensing, engineering, procurement, and construction partner on TerraPower's Natrium team. Selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for its Advanced Reactor demonstration Program, Natrium is participating in a DOE initiative to re-establish U.S. leadership in nuclear energy that provides matching funds to industry to design and build an operational advanced reactor. TerraPower, a leading advanced generation technology company founded by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, will be deploying its 345 MWE sodium fast reactor (SFR), called Natrium. The Natrium Demonstration plant features an advanced, cost-competitive reactor design that is safer, easier and less costly to construct, less expensive to operate, and able to provide energy that is competitive with fossil fuels. It also features an innovative molten salt storage output, combined, the plant can produce more than 500 MWE. The Natrium Demonstration plant will be licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Job Summary

In this role, you will participate in the design, development, and evaluation of control systems components and processes. You will collaborate and support other engineering disciplines for control systems matters. Your professional work knowledge and abilities through the application of standard control systems engineering techniques will enable you to make impactful contributions to the team. This position is performed under the leadership of a Control Systems Engineering supervisor, lead or designee.

This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and will require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.

Major Responsibilities
  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard Control Systems engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Coordinates work and collaborates with other engineering disciplines.
  • Specifies instrumentation and control valves for various plant systems.
  • Generates instrument and control valve data sheets and material requisitions.
  • Performs technical bid evaluations.
  • Reviews supplier-provided data and documentation.
  • Generates and applies Instrument Installation Details (IIDs).
  • Prepares and reviews control cabinet/panel layouts.
  • Prepares instrument location drawings (from 3D model).
  • Designs and reviews Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for various plant systems.
  • Prepares and reviews control narratives.
  • Prepares and reviews control logic diagrams.
  • Works within various Control Systems databases (e.g., Instrument Index, I/O list, etc.).
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Requires bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Electro-mechanical or related engineering field from an accredited university and 1-2 years of relevant experience.
Basic Qualifications
  • Must be a US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident per contract requirement.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 application suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, Visio, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Knowledgeable of Codes and Standards pertinent to control systems engineering and nuclear industry.
Preferred Qualifications
  • EIT / FE Certification.
  • Commercial power plant (nuclear or fossil) or DOE nuclear facility experience.
