Control Systems Engineer II
The Control Systems Engineer II must have a strong desire to go beyond minimum expectations, deliver technically sound solutions, and provide exceptional customer service in fast-paced industrial manufacturing and process environments.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities
- Provides technical support, troubleshooting, and engineering analysis for installed industrial control systems, automation systems, and connected plant-floor technologies
- Develops, modifies, tests, and commissions PLC programs and HMI/SCADA graphics for industrial automation projects
- Programs and supports Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley control platforms, including ControlLogix and related technologies
- Supports the integration of plant-floor control systems with industrial data, visualization, reporting, and higher-level manufacturing applications
- Participates in projects involving digital transformation, connected operations, and emerging AI-enabled industrial solutions where applicable
- Performs engineering calculations following standard methods and principles and applies sound engineering judgment based on project requirements and experience
- Assists in the development of project specifications, estimates, change orders, engineering documentation, and project schedules
- Manages assigned portions of automation and controls projects and proactively identifies and resolves technical, schedule, and implementation issues
- Gathers information relevant to technical problems, communicates findings to the project team, and develops alternative solutions
- Assists engineers and project managers in performing project activities both in the office and at customer manufacturing and industrial sites
- Works with vendors, equipment suppliers, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to procure and integrate control equipment and materials
- Supports plant electrical and maintenance personnel by designing, understanding, and troubleshooting electrical control circuits
- Assists in the design of electrical circuits for instrumentation, motor control, variable-speed applications, and other industrial electrical controls
- Supports control system architecture, industrial network infrastructure, hardware configuration, system checkout, start-up, and commissioning
- Develops and maintains control system documentation, including I/O information, drawings, configuration records, and technical troubleshooting documentation
- Collaborates with multidisciplinary engineering, project management, data, and technology teams to deliver integrated industrial solutions
- Occasionally provides technical guidance or supervision to other engineers and designers
Qualifications / Technical Skills
- Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, engineers, technicians, and project stakeholders
- Strong customer-service orientation with a helpful, collaborative, and professional demeanor
- Strong understanding of PLC system architecture, control system layouts, and industrial automation equipment
- Ability to specify PLC I/O addressing, I/O assignments, controller hardware, and associated control system requirements
- Ability to program, configure, and troubleshoot industrial PLCs, with experience in Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley platforms strongly aligned with the role
- Experience with ControlLogix, Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000, SLC 500, Modicon, or comparable industrial PLC platforms
- Experience setting up, configuring, developing, and supporting HMI/SCADA systems, including technologies such as FactoryTalk, iFIX, Wonderware, and PanelView
