Description

Chalk Point Generating Station, situated in Aquasco, Maryland, is a key power generation facility with a total capacity of approximately 1,618 MW. The station features a diverse lineup of nine generating units, including seven gas turbines and two steam turbines. This strategic configuration enhances efficiency and reliability, ensuring the station effectively meets regional energy demands.

Opportunity Summary

The Control Room Supervisor at Chalk Point Generating Station leads safe and reliable plant operations during the assigned shift, overseeing control room activities, equipment, and operations personnel. This position directs plant startups and shutdowns, monitors performance, responds to alarms and abnormal conditions, and coordinates troubleshooting and corrective actions.

The Control Room Supervisor provides shift leadership and ensures operations comply with plant procedures, technical requirements, and safety and environmental standards.

Your scope of responsibility as Control Room Supervisor will include the following primary functions:

  • Direct the startup, operation, monitoring, and shutdown of plant equipment, including combustion turbines, HRSGs, steam turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems.
  • Monitor plant systems and equipment performance, respond to alarms and abnormal conditions, and direct appropriate corrective actions to maintain safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
  • Lead operations personnel during normal operations, plant upsets, emergencies, and other abnormal conditions, providing clear direction for containment, control, troubleshooting, and recovery.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and direction to operations personnel, assigning work, reinforcing operating standards, and supporting employee training and development.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs and plant records, including electrical and steam output, emissions, fuel and water consumption, heat rates, equipment status, and other required operating data.
  • Ensure effective shift turnover by communicating equipment status, operating conditions, abnormalities, ongoing work, and other critical information to incoming personnel.
  • Lead troubleshooting of plant equipment and operating issues, coordinating with Operations, Maintenance, technical personnel, and plant management to identify causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate and support maintenance and outage activities, including equipment identification, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), troubleshooting, work requests, equipment status, and safe return to service.
  • Maintain and review operating procedures, manuals, technical references, drawings, logs, tag-out records, and other operational documentation to support safe and compliant plant operation.
  • Lead and participate in NAES safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance programs, enforcing established requirements and promoting accountability for safe work practices.
  • Maintain proficiency in plant systems and operating procedures while identifying equipment or operational conditions that could affect reliability, availability, safety, or environmental performance.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned by the Operations Manager to support safe and reliable plant operations.

Working Relationships

The Control Room Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager and responds to directions from plant management. The Control Room Supervisor gives direction to operations personnel as it pertains to the safe and efficient daily operation of the plant.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The Control Room Supervisor follows a modified DuPont rotating 12-hour shift schedule, ensuring 24/7 coverage through a structured rotation of day and night shifts that includes built-in rest days to support continuous and reliable plant operations. This position will require extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed to support plant operations and business needs and may also require callout availability. Depending on the position, on-call status may or may not apply.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $57.69 to $64.90 per hour, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

Operational Expertise and Leadership Competencies

  • Associate degree in Power Plant Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Process Technology, or a related technical field is preferred. Relevant technical training, power generation, industrial, or military experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Extensive power plant operations experience, including control room operations, system monitoring, and response to abnormal operating conditions; large-frame gas turbine and combined-cycle experience is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of power generation equipment and systems, including combustion turbines, HRSGs, steam turbines, generators, auxiliary systems, and associated operating procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of combustion and steam turbine operations, steam generation systems, plant operating parameters, industrial safety, environmental requirements, and hazardous material management.
  • Working knowledge of water chemistry, water treatment systems, chemical handling, and monitoring and analysis of plant water conditions.
  • Proven leadership or supervisory experience with the ability to direct operations personnel, coordinate shift activities, make sound operating decisions, and develop team capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot plant equipment and operating conditions, respond effectively to alarms and plant upsets, and coordinate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Strong safety and environmental compliance knowledge, along with effective verbal and written communication skills for coordinating with employees, management, Maintenance, and technical personnel.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
