Qualifications

Job Description - Control Operator-II

The Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all Plant equipment under their control in accordance with written plant procedures and under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor and Plant Manager. They may work with a Maintenance Mechanic on duty, who can assist with starting and stopping plant machinery and equipment. In the absence of specific orders and directives, the Operator exercises initiative, using experience and good judgment in plant operations. They must comply with company policies, including safety and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

The Control Operator II takes work direction from the Main Operator IV on duty and/or Plant Lead, reporting to the Operations Manager. Typical duties include:

  1. Monitoring and controlling all plant machinery and equipment, including boilers, chillers, generators, and cooling towers.
  2. Ensuring plant operations are affected appropriately by all activities within the plant and distribution system.
  3. Starting, running, monitoring, adjusting, and stopping plant machinery safely.
  4. Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), and contributing to continuous improvement.
  5. Recording plant operating parameters.
  6. Monitoring customer consumption levels and demands via SCADA system.
  7. Performing tests on operating equipment as directed.
  8. Monitoring and adjusting water chemistry in plant water systems.
  9. Maintaining the Control Room’s appearance and housekeeping.
  10. Upgrading skills and knowledge of plant systems, equipment, and components as directed.
  11. Acquiring knowledge and/or skills comparable to Maintenance Mechanics.
  12. Willingness to work overtime, scheduled or short notice.
  13. Knowledge of pneumatic and electric controls is desirable.
  14. Performing additional duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

The operator typically works within a control room setting in a thermal plant. The environment may include stairs and ladders to access difficult spaces, working at heights, in high/low ambient temperatures, low light, and high humidity areas. The work schedule is usually 8-hour shifts, with possible 12-hour shifts as scheduled by the Operations Supervisor to ensure plant operation and compliance with Omaha boiler codes. Overtime may be required on short notice.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Mechanical aptitude and skills.
  • Basic ability to learn complex systems and respond to emergencies with judgment and intuition.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and digital controls.
  • Physical ability to work in hot and cold environments, on ladders, lift up to 75 lbs., and stand for long periods.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Good water testing skills.
  • Experience with SOP, JSA, and LOTO systems is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Experience operating high-pressure boilers, large chillers, cooling towers, steam turbines, pumps, and fans is preferred.
  • Experience with chemical treatment systems is desired.
  • City of Omaha 3rd Grade Stationary Engineer license is highly preferred, with several years of experience recommended.
