Job summary

Kelly Science, Engineering, Technology & Telecom is seeking an Automation & Controls Engineer (Manufacturing) for onsite work in Lenexa, KS. You will design, update, and troubleshoot Rockwell PLC-based systems, with a focus on performance and safety in a plant environment.

Responsibilities include hands-on installation, startup, documentation, and support across control systems, HMIs, and SCADA, ensuring production efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation Engineering, or related field.
  • At least 3 years of direct experience with industrial automation and PLC systems in manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley hardware and Rockwell programming tools (Studio 5000, RSLogix 5000).
  • Familiarity with HMI/SCADA systems (FactoryTalk, Wonderware, Ignition, or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, Modbus).
  • Experience with instrumentation, VFDs, servo systems, and motor control.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70, OSHA 29 CFR 1910, NFPA 79.
  • Ability to read technical diagrams and schematics.
  • Strong problem-solving and ability to communicate technical concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to HMI/SCADA interfaces to ensure reliable control.
  • Participate in automation project lifecycle from requirements to operations handover.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and control-system problems to reduce downtime.
  • Create and update wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and programming guidelines.
  • Collaborate with engineers to improve process reliability, throughput, and safety.
  • Perform risk assessments and plan system improvements.
  • Provide onsite and remote support for production challenges.
  • Train maintenance staff and operators on control-system operations.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, OSHA, ISA/IEC and company standards.

Automation & Controls Engineer (Manufacturing) – Lenexa, KS (Onsite)
Job Overview

Join our team as an Automation & Controls Engineer supporting advanced manufacturing operations. You’ll be responsible for designing, updating, and troubleshooting industrial control systems, focusing on Rockwell/Allen-Bradley solutions, and ensuring optimal performance in a plant environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program, enhance, and maintain industrial automation systems, primarily using Rockwell (Allen-Bradley) PLCs such as ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and MicroLogix.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to HMI and SCADA interfaces, particularly with platforms like FactoryTalk View and Ignition, to ensure reliable monitoring and control of production processes.
  • Play an active role throughout the automation project lifecycle, including defining requirements, hands‑on installation, startup, and transition to operations teams.
  • Troubleshoot and correct technical problems concerning control systems, field instrumentation, and electrical failures to reduce operational interruptions.
  • Create and keep current all related electrical and controls documentation, such as wiring diagrams, P&IDs, operation descriptions, and programming guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers to improve process reliability, throughput, and employee safety with tailored control strategies.
  • Carry out periodic assessments and technical reviews to identify risks, recommend maintenance, and outline system improvements.
  • Deliver onsite and remote support as needed for time‑sensitive production challenges.
  • Train and support maintenance staff and operators on control system operations and basic diagnostic techniques.
  • Ensure all automation and controls activities comply with relevant industry regulations (NEC, OSHA, ISA/IEC) and company standards.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation Engineering, or related field.
  • At least 3 years of direct experience with industrial automation and PLC systems in manufacturing.
  • Proven hands‑on skills with Allen‑Bradley hardware and Rockwell programming tools (such as Studio 5000 and RSLogix 5000).
  • Practical familiarity with HMI/SCADA systems (FactoryTalk, Wonderware, Ignition, or equivalent).
  • Understanding of industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, Modbus).
  • Experience with instrumentation, VFDs, servo systems, and motor control systems.
  • Working knowledge of applicable electrical and safety codes (NFPA 70, OSHA 29 CFR 1910, NFPA 79).
  • Competency in interpreting technical diagrams and industrial schematics.
  • Strong problem‑solving abilities and effective communication of technical concepts.
Preferred Extras
  • Credentials such as Rockwell CLD certification.
  • Background with batch processing systems and knowledge of ISA‑88.
  • Experience integrating MES or ERP systems (like SAP) with automation controls.
  • Familiarity with industrial robotics (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, etc.).
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma.
  • Industry experience in food, chemical, packaging, or life sciences.
  • Awareness of cybersecurity strategies for industrial environments.
Work Environment/Other Info
  • This position is fully onsite at our Lenexa, KS location; remote work is not an option.
  • Expect regular exposure to operational plant conditions, including machinery, varying noise levels, and occasional work at heights.
  • Willingness to provide emergency or after‑hours support and possible travel for training or support at affiliated sites (up to 10%).
