Position Definition

The Adapted Physical Education Teacher shall have responsibility to provide a physical education program of instruction for students to promote the development of recreation and leisure skills for greater participation in family, school, and community life.

Relationship

The Adapted Physical Education Teacher will be directly responsible to the Supervisor of Programs and Services.

Qualifications
Education / Experience

PDE certification in Health and Physical Education.

Authority

The Adapted Physical Education Teacher will have the authority to perform all functions listed below in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Functions / Duties / Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function/duty/responsibility at acceptable standards. In accordance with both state and/or federal law, reasonable accommodations will be considered upon employee request.

  • Conducts functional assessments on recreation and leisure skills for students with disabilities.
  • Provides and/or oversees the provision of a functional physical education curriculum for assigned students.
  • Develops opportunities for increased integration in the schools for students with a disability into social recreation and leisure activities.
  • Works with staff to integrate students with disabilities into school and community activities.
  • Promotes the transition of students with disabilities the participation from home and school to community social, recreation, and leisure activities.
  • Knowledge of the content and pedagogy is extensive, showing evidence of a continuing search for improved practice.
  • Outcomes reflect high level learning relating to curriculum frameworks and standards, are adapted, where necessary, to the needs of individual students, and permit viable methods of assessment.
  • Creates an environment of respect and rapport and establishes a culture for learning, where learning is valued by all.
  • Sets high expectations for learning for all students.
  • Organizes physical space to ensure the classroom is safe and students have equal access to learning activities.
  • Demonstrates skills of effectively managing student behavior that are preventative and respectful to individual students.
  • Provides instruction via clear and accurate oral and written communication.
