Freelance Principal Medical Writer – Medical Affairs & Publications

Location: United States (Remote)

Contract Type: Freelance / Contract

We’re supporting a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients seeking experienced Freelance Principal Medical Writers (PMW) to support their Medical Affairs and publications activities on a contract basis.

This is an opportunity to work on high-impact, data-driven scientific communications, partnering with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver high-quality publication outputs.

The Role

As a Freelance Principal Medical Writer, you will support the development and execution of publication plans and scientific communications across Medical Affairs.

You’ll work cross-functionally with Clinical, Biostatistics, and Medical teams, as well as external authors and vendors, to ensure timely and compliant delivery of materials.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead development of manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and congress presentations
• Contribute to and execute publication plans aligned with clinical data releases
• Translate complex clinical data into clear, accurate, and scientifically robust content
• Collaborate with Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, and Biostatistics teams
• Manage interactions with external authors, investigators, and KOLs
• Review and edit materials from medical communications agencies or vendors
• Ensure compliance with ICMJE and GPP3

What We’re Looking For

• Advanced degree (PhD, PharmD, MD, or MSc) in a relevant life sciences field
• Extensive experience in medical writing within pharma/biotech or medical communications
• Strong track record in publications (manuscripts, congress materials, publication planning)
• Experience working within Medical Affairs environments
• Ability to operate independently in a freelance/contract capacity
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills

Preferred Experience

• Experience in oncology or other complex therapeutic areas
• Prior experience as a Principal / Lead Medical Writer
• Familiarity with global publication planning and execution
• Experience working with multiple clients or projects simultaneously
• Flexible contract durations (project-based or ongoing support)
• Fully remote within the US
