The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for Content Supervisor - Social Studies and Physical Education, Job Code 076, TS 522 (260 Days), Salary Range (TBD). Collective Bargaining Unit none. This is a State Teachers Retirement System position.

Position Summary: The Content Supervisor drives curriculum and instructional excellence through a lens of equity, fostering high-impact strategies that ensure all students receive rigorous, high-quality instruction. This role is responsible for the strategic development of curriculum, instructional resources, and assessment related to Physical Education and Social Studies, providing leadership for the enhancement of effective instruction and student learning district-wide. The Content Supervisor will design and deliver differentiated resources to meet the professional needs of instructional staff.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Lead the strategic alignment of Physical Education and Social Studies curricula with district-wide equity goals and culturally responsive pedagogical practices.
  • Cultivate a collaborative culture of data-informed decision-making that prioritizes closing achievement gaps and enhancing student engagement.
  • Develop and oversee comprehensive, high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) and professional development initiatives that build teacher capacity and foster inclusive, supportive learning environments.
  • Strengthen community and university partnerships to broaden student access to enrichment and career pathways within these content areas.
  • Champion systemic improvements that ensure consistent, high-quality instruction across all buildings, directly contributing to the district's "Blueprint for Excellence" and student outcome objectives.
  • Attend meetings and trainings to stay up to date on curriculum changes and standards from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW)
  • Develop and supervise district curriculum programming related to Physical Education and Social Studies, including instructional strategies and accountability of programming.
  • Develop, support, and grow community partnerships and programming related to content within the department or across other departments in Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Collaborate and assist with initiatives and expectations from Teaching and Learning, and all departments in Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Manage budgets and coordinate ordering and distribution of classroom materials.
  • Leads buildings in the gathering, examination, and analysis of formative and summative assessment data (State and District) leveraging results to evaluate curriculum
    effectiveness, identify instructional gaps, and inform district-wide curricular direction and programming decisions in Physical Education and Social Studies.
  • Demonstrates ability to navigate and utilize technology-based applications appropriate to teaching and learning environments.
  • Supports and directs teacher teams in the planning for intervention and remediation for all students who have not mastered the content standards.
  • Keeps current on research-based instructional strategies and best practices with an emphasis on student engagement and learning.
  • Oversee, develop, monitor, and facilitate the use of assessments, pacing guides, and content standards across the curriculum, including the creation, vetting, archiving, and evaluation of district-wide assessments.
  • Operates with a growth mindset and produces innovative strategies to support teaching and learning.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources in the annual staffing process to inform the assignment and placement of Physical Education teachers across district buildings.
  • Manages, plans, and carries out strategies to ensure compliance with state and federal accountability measures.
  • Participate in the recruitment, screening, and selection of instructional staff in assigned content areas, and support the onboarding and professional growth of new hires in collaboration with Human Resources and school leadership.
  • Partner with colleges and universities to coordinate student teacher placements in assigned content areas.
  • Develop a district adoption program that evaluates curriculum, new software/hardware, supplemental materials, and review of programs to support teaching and learning.
  • Engage with vendors on curriculum, professional development, and content-specific training.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A clear demonstration of experience leading equity-focused instructional initiatives in an urban educational setting.
  • Proven success in implementing systems-level change, managing budgets, and facilitating complex, district-wide professional development.
  • A profound commitment to urban education, characterized by a track record of improving student achievement for diverse learners.
  • Ohio Principal or Supervisor Certification.
  • Master's Degree in Education or related field.
  • Five or more years of successful teaching experience in assigned content area.
Preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with district-level curriculum adoption processes
  • Experience in a formal instructional leadership or coaching role
  • Familiarity with Ohio's learning standards in both Physical Education and Social Studies
  • Experience presenting to or facilitating large groups (community, board, staff)
  • Experience managing budgets or coordinating large-scale resource procurement
