Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY

The Content Specialist will be responsible for supporting the Program Director for a school-based after-school program funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) To provide specialized instructional services and academic support to students in the designated content area. The Content Specialist will report to and be supervised by the Program Director, focusing on activity design and implementation.

We are seeking a qualified Content Specialist with a strong commitment to youth development to work in our comprehensive year-round Youth Development Centers (after-school, holiday, and summer camp programs). The Content Specialist will ensure that staff are providing/facilitating fun and engaging activities with a focus on: Academic Support; Leadership Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM); Literacy; Healthy Living; Life Skills; and Physical Activity.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create and design age-appropriate lesson plans for participants. Collect, review and provide feedback on all lesson plans to ensure proper alignment with Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and NYCPS standards.
  • Develop instructional materials to support participants in improving comprehension and retention of specific subject matter, while strengthening academic skills in targeted areas.
  • Identify participants who are struggling with course material and provide individualized support, encouragement, and alternative approaches to enhance understanding.
  • Work collaboratively with the Program Director, Assistant Director, and school staff to align instructional support with academic expectations and develop activities, assignments, practice tests, and learning strategies that support student achievement.
  • Provide coaching and guidance on classroom management techniques and other areas f professional development.
  • Create or use curriculum tools to support curriculum integrity and develop academic learning plans for participants.
  • Encourage participants’ motivation, confidence and positive attitudes toward learning by recognizing their efforts, progress, and achievements.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants by providing appropriate supervision at all times.
  • Create and maintain a consistent strength-based, youth-focused environment that is responsive to participants with learning, emotional, or behavioral differences.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation, including attendance, sign-in/sign-out forms, behavior reports, incident reports, and accident reports, as appropriate.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with parents and guardians through regular communication about their child’s strengths, progress, and areas of growth.
  • Comply with all Department of Health (DOH), New Settlement, and DYCD standards, expectations, and regulations.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by the Program Director, authorized designee.
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Childhood Development, Sociology, Psychology, or related field required
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with youth (elementary or middle school-aged/based experience a plus).
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience supervising staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, multi-tasking, time management, and communication skills required.
  • Experience working with school-age youth and youth of diverse backgrounds preferred.
  • Knowledge of youth development principles, such as Social Emotional Learning (SEL) a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to take initiative and manage tasks while working in a multi-faceted, busy environment.
  • Ability to motivate participants to participate in activities which focus on Academic Support, LeadershipDevelopment, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), Literacy, HealthyLiving, andPhysical Recreation.
  • Must be able to attend occasional morning, evening, or weekend meetings and/or trainings.
  • Must have a commitmentto workfroma strength-based and/or youth development perspective.
  • Must be able to work holidaysasneeded.
  • Must possess the abilitytomaintainconfidentialityanduseappropriate discretion.
