Job summary

United Launch Alliance in Centennial, CO is seeking a Contamination Control Engineer RS-2 to join our team supporting Vulcan missions. You will develop contamination control requirements and verify them across production and launch operations.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in Chemical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering, 2+ years of related experience, strong communication and teamwork, and willingness to travel. Eligibility for a DoD Secret clearance is required.

Job Overview & Responsibilities

United Launch Alliance is seeking a proactive, effective, innovative, and experienced Contamination Control Engineer RS-2 to join our team in Centennial, CO. The successful candidate will be a key member of a world-class team in supporting the analysis, design, and integration of Vulcan missions. These efforts support our mission to Save Lives, Explore the Universe, and Connect the World.

The Contamination Control Engineer position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Develops launch vehicle system contamination control requirements consistent with mission needs and ensures implementation and verification of requirements across the organization including production and launch operations.
  • Performs analyses of launch vehicle molecular and particulate contamination sources, transport and deposition onto payload surfaces.
  • Develops requirements for contamination- critical hardware molecular and particulate cleanliness and develops contamination control operational requirements consistent with achieving and maintaining required cleanliness levels.
  • Articulates the contamination control program via written and oral communications across the organization and with the external customer community.
  • Resolves contamination issues that arise due to operational use in the field during production and launch operations.
  • Periodic travel to the launch sites and Factory is required.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited college or university is required.
    • Note a Master's Degree in a related field of study may be considered when evaluating required years of experience.
  • The ability to work with minimum supervision and solve complex problems independently by applying engineering principles and concepts.
  • Understanding of non-metallic material property testing and compatibility.
  • Exposure to instrumental analysis, contamination control, and various computer programs.
  • Experience with particle and molecular contamination sampling and monitoring techniques. Familiarity with standard testing techniques (e.g.: ASTM E-595, ASTM-E-1559, ASTM-E-1216, ASTM-E-1235).
  • Must have ability to solve difficult problems by applying basic engineering/scientific principles and concepts.
  • Must have interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with others.
  • Strong and effective communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to travel when required.
  • This position will require working extended hours, weekends, and 2nd or 3rd shifts as necessary to support vehicle processing and launch.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights and small spaces.
  • As a condition of employment, individual must be able to obtain and therefore maintain the minimum of a DOD Secret security clearance to support National Security Space missions and access classified information, to include be COMSEC briefed, up to the DOD Secret level.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proactive to help drive intelligent designs, and collaborates well in a design and analysis team environment.
  • Training in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience with GC, FTIR, microscope, wet chemistry, and Karl Fisher titration methodologies.
  • Experience with molecular and particulate contamination source, transport and deposition phenomena and techniques for analysis.
  • Experience with Thermal Desktop, AutoCAD, MATHCAD software.
  • Experience with aerospace (spacecraft and/or launch system) contamination control processes.
Summary Salary Range (forULA - Denver only):

$85,372.00 - $142,287.00

Please note that the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon a candidate's experience and qualifications, as well as internal equity, market and business considerations. Employees may be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in addition to base pay.
