Job description

Join the Indian Health Service as a Contact Representative (Benefits Coordinator) and help patients access healthcare benefits and resources. You will assist with eligibility and enrollment, provide information about available benefit programs, and coordinate with patients and outside agencies while building a rewarding career in public service and healthcare administration. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
GS-06

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples include conducting screening or interviews to obtain or verify information; assisting patients or customers with completing forms and understanding program requirements; reviewing information for completeness; obtaining missing information; and coordinating with other organizations or organizational units to facilitate eligibility or benefit services.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples include applying established government or private-sector benefit program policies and procedures; interviewing patients or customers to obtain and verify information needed for eligibility or enrollment; assisting with applications and enrollment in healthcare, insurance, or other benefit programs; researching routine eligibility or benefit questions; coordinating with outside organizations to obtain required information; and prioritizing workload to complete multiple assignments within established time frames.

GS-08

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples include interpreting and applying government or private-sector benefit program regulations and eligibility requirements for programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Affordable Care Act Marketplace plans, Veterans health benefits, or other alternate resources; conducting in-depth interviews to determine eligibility and identify available benefit resources; assisting individuals with enrollment in multiple benefit programs; researching and resolving eligibility, enrollment, coverage, or benefit denial issues; providing guidance regarding benefit programs, rights, eligibility criteria, and requirements; researching changes in program rules and regulations and communicating benefit updates; compiling program data and preparing reports; and coordinating with patients, healthcare providers, and outside agencies to resolve difficult benefit-related issues.

Time In Grade

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
