ALPENA ALCONA AREA Credit Union is seeking a Consumer Loan Underwriter in Alpena, MI. The role analyzes, evaluates, and approves or denies consumer loan applications in line with credit union policies and regulations, while emphasizing member experience and risk management.

Role:
A Consumer Loan Underwriter understands, communicates and works to achieve and follow the Credit Union's mission and member promise statements. This role is responsible for analyzing, evaluating, and approving or denying consumer loan applications in compliance with AAACU's lending policies, procedures, and applicable regulations. This position ensures that lending decisions are made promptly and accurately while maintaining a strong focus on member experience and risk management.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Review and analyze consumer loan applications for accuracy and completeness.
Assess creditworthiness using credit reports, income verification, debt-to-income ratios, and collateral valuation.
Make sound underwriting decisions within delegated lending authority or recommend decision for higher approval levels.
Ensure all loan decisions adhere to AAACU loan policies, federal and state regulations, and NCUA guideline.
Identify and mitigate potential risks while maintaining AAACU's loan quality and portfolio performance.
Communicate loan decisions to branch staff, lending officers, and originators.
Provide guidance to branch and lending teams regarding structuring loans to meet member needs while maintaining prudent risk practices. Assist in training and mentoring staff on lending policies and credit guidelines.
Work closely with loan processors, originators, and branch staff to ensure smooth and timely loan processing.
Performs other job related duties as assigned.

2. Ensure accuracy of loan decisions.
3. Ensure loan decisions are in compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and lending regulations, policies, and procedures.
4. Provide informed, professional, and accurate service and support to all members and associates.
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience One year to three years of similar or related experience.
Education (1) A bachelor's degree, or (2) achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor's degree (e.g., information technology certifications in lieu of a degree).
Interpersonal Skills Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for the purpose of first-level conflict resolution, building relationships, and soliciting cooperation. Discussions involve a higher degree of confidentiality and discretion, requiring diplomacy and tact in communication.
