Job description

The Division of Medical Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking full-time faculty to join our team of Consultation-Liaison (C-L) psychiatrists. The Division was created in 2021 to integrate the delivery of mental health care across multiple clinics and medical services within the Stanford medical care system, including Stanford Health Care (SHC), Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital/Stanford Children’s Hospital (LPCH), and Stanford University School of Medicine (SOM). Our services are delivered in inpatient and outpatient settings, in collaboration with a range of medical and surgical specialty teams. Our faculty teach and supervise C-L psychiatry fellows, psychiatry residents, medical students, and other trainees rotating through these services.

This position is under the Clinician Educator (CE) Service Line. The Clinician Educator role is defined by engagement in clinical care and teaching that advances clinical medicine. Clinician Educators are also encouraged to engage in scholarly activity and to perform in an administrative role.

CLINICAL SERVICES

This recruitment is not limited to a single subspecialty area. The Division's C-L faculty support the services described below, and candidates are welcome to apply with interest and background in one or more of them. The specific service(s) and clinical focus for this position will be built around the candidate's training, board certification, and clinical interest. Applicants should indicate in their cover letter which service(s) they are interested in supporting.

  • Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (CLP) Service. The inpatient CLP Service provides consultation across Stanford Health Care's 23 medical and surgical units for psychiatric conditions arising in the context of medical and surgical illness. The team offers a range of treatment recommendations, including pharmacotherapy, hypnosis, cognitive-behavioral management plans, and brief supportive psychotherapy, and coordinates with disciplines such as neurology, social work, spiritual care, and rehabilitation services. The team includes CLP attending physicians, CLP fellows, second-year psychiatry residents, internal medicine or neurology residents, and medical students.
  • Critical Care Psychiatry (CCP) Service. The CCP Service provides consultation to Stanford's 10 specialized critical care units for the management of psychiatric conditions arising in the context of critical illness, using the same range of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions as the CLP Service. The team includes CLP attending physicians, CLP fellows, psychiatry and medicine/neurology residents, and medical students.
  • GI Behavioral Medicine. This program focuses on the brain-gut connection in chronic digestive symptoms and disorders. The multidisciplinary team, which includes an advanced practice provider, GI and liver health psychologists, and a psychiatrist, provides evidence-based assessment and treatment for conditions such as abdominal pain, heartburn, and other disorders of gut-brain interaction, in close collaboration with Gastroenterology.
  • Psychiatric Oncology Service. This service includes teams at both the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Inpatient Proactive Psychosocial Oncology Service, providing psychiatric care to patients at all stages of a cancer diagnosis in inpatient and outpatient settings, in close collaboration with medical, surgical, and radiation oncology. The team includes CLP attending physicians, CLP fellows, and social workers.
  • Women's Reproductive Psychiatry Service. This service provides specialized psychiatric consultation and management across the reproductive lifespan, including preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause, and manages acute psychiatric conditions in medically complex obstetric and gynecologic patients. The team includes a CLP attending physician with specialized training in women's reproductive mental health and CLP fellows, working in close collaboration with obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, pediatrics, psychology, social work, and nursing.
  • Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH). The IBH Program provides collaborative-care psychiatric consultation within Stanford's primary care clinics, working alongside primary care physicians, licensed clinical social workers, and care coordinators. IBH psychiatry faculty provide regularly scheduled caseload consultation, registry-based population health management, e-consults, and direct patient evaluation through co-visits or one-time consultation. Current areas of program need include child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and senior care, behavioral health integration in Express Care, and continued adult primary care program development. The specific focus for this position will be built around the candidate's training and interest.
  • Transplant Psychiatry Service. This combined inpatient/outpatient service provides pretransplant psychiatric evaluation, screening of prospective living donors, post-transplant management of psychiatric complications, and inpatient consultation for transplant patients, in close collaboration with the transplant surgery teams and social work.
  • Neurology Movement Disorders Integration (growing service). The Division is building a fully integrated, psychiatry-forward collaborative care model within Stanford's Movement Disorders Center, following the Collaborative Care model established by the Division's IBH program. A behavioral health care manager tracks patients with Parkinson disease, atypical Parkinsonism, Huntington disease, and related conditions in a registry, working alongside a consulting psychiatrist who provides weekly case review, direct evaluation, and co-visits for complex presentations such as PD psychosis, mood and anxiety disorders, impulse-control disorders, and functional neurological disorders. The role also supports the Movement Disorders Center's Deep Brain Stimulation Surgical Review Board and its Huntington's Disease and Ataxia Neurogenetics Clinic. As a new and expanding service, this area offers substantial opportunity to shape program design.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific duties will be built around the service(s) the candidate supports. The role may include some, but not necessarily all, of the following.

  1. Provide inpatient and/or outpatient consultation-liaison psychiatric evaluation and management for patients referred from medical, surgical, or subspecialty services within the applicant's area(s) of focus.
  2. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, social work, and care coordinators, to develop and implement integrated treatment plans.
  3. For registry-based collaborative care services (IBH and Movement Disorders Integration), participate in structured caseload review and registry-based population management, and provide indirect psychiatric consultation to the treating team.
  4. Provide timely treatment recommendations to referring or treating clinicians, both as notes in the electronic medical record and through direct clinician engagement.
  5. Teach and supervise C-L psychiatry fellows, psychiatry residents, medical students, and other trainees rotating through supported services.
  6. Participate in program development, quality improvement, or clinical scholarship within the applicant's area(s) of focus, as interest and program need allow.
  7. Participate in telephone or e-consult coverage for referring clinicians as applicable to the supported service(s).
RANK AND SALARY

Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience. Base pay ranges are listed below.

This position commands a competitive salary enhanced by an attractive benefits package, including but not limited to generous housing assistance and home purchase programs, bonus programs, paid vacation time, paid personal time, health, dental, and vision benefits, paid malpractice, and 403(b) plans.

Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Stanford also welcomes applications from others who would bring additional dimensions to the University's research, teaching, and clinical missions.

Eligible candidates must hold an MD or DO degree (or equivalent), possess or be fully eligible for a California medical license, and be board-certified or board-eligible in both General Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. Additional subspecialty training or certification is preferred depending on the service area(s) of interest. Participation in clinical research or program development is optional but encouraged.

Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting and excellent communication skills. A positive, flexible, and solution-focused approach is important, as is the ability to synthesize medical and psychiatric data quickly and formulate evidence-based clinical recommendations.
