Job summary

Atlas is seeking CEI Construction Inspectors to join our Construction Inspection practice team in Columbia, South Carolina. You will perform technical inspection and testing procedures across concrete, earthwork, asphalt, erosion control, and related areas for SCDOT projects.

Applicants should have SCDOT certifications or be able to obtain them, with a background in highway construction and inspection procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and minimum one year of construction inspection experience on bridge or roadway projects.
  • Or two years of construction inspection experience with at least one year on bridge or roadway projects.
  • Certification in area of inspection (e.g., Concrete Level 1/2, Asphalt Roadway Technician, Asphalt (HMA) Level 1, Earthwork/Base, Foundations, Pavement Preservation) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with plans, specs, and testing procedures per the SCDOT Construction Manual.
  • Record daily construction activities and document progress details.
  • Verify that estimates reflect quantities installed and provide payment recommendations as needed.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and inspection records.
  • Communicate inspection findings and project status to stakeholders.

Job Description

We are seeking CEI Construction Inspectors to join our Construction Inspection practice team in Columbia, South Carolina.

This position may perform highly technical and specialized inspection and testing procedures in the areas of concrete, foundations, soils, earthwork, asphalt roadway, asphalt plant, erosion control, signal installations, survey verification, etc. on various construction projects for the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and may report to the SCDOT's Resident Construction Engineer on projects statewide.

Core Responsibilities
  • Monitor the work of the contractor to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and sampling and testing procedures outlined in the SCDOT Construction Manual.
  • Record daily construction activities, documenting the type and location of work performed and all pertinent details related to project progress.
  • Verify that construction estimates accurately reflect quantities installed by the contractor and make recommendations for payment.
  • Maintain accurate and complete project documentation and inspection records.
  • Communicate inspection findings and project status updates to project stakeholders as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Consultant inspectors must be certified in the specific area in which they will be inspecting. Required SCDOT certifications include one or more of the following: Concrete Level 1 or Level 2, Asphalt Roadway Technician, Asphalt (HMA) Level 1, Earthwork/Base, Foundations, or Pavement Preservation.
  • Ability to read and interpret applicable plans, specifications, and inspection procedures.
  • Knowledge of highway construction, inspection procedures, and materials testing.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in highway construction.
  • Ability to take detailed notes and prepare and review reports.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a minimum of one (1) year of construction inspection experience dedicated to bridge or roadway projects; or
  • High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two (2) years of construction inspection experience, including at least one (1) year dedicated to bridge or roadway projects.
Preferred Certifications
  • ACI Field Testing Technician – Grade I.
  • Pre-Highway Asphalt Roadway Technician Certification.
