Job description

Overview

This is a temporary position to support the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) Project. The role lasts a minimum of one year or until project completion and reports to the Outside Plant Supervisor. Duties include island-wide external plant maintenance and extensions such as digging, installing and securing fiber/cable lines, microducts, handholes, conduits, and clearing vegetation.

Responsibilities
  • Install and run new cable lines, microducts, and conduits for underground and overhead plant systems, including necessary groundwork dig.
  • Install handholes.
  • Assist in fiber blowing activities.
  • Secure fiber and cable lines along with associated hardware.
  • Clear vegetation encroaching on cable lines and equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications, Capabilities, And Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED).
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain and maintain a valid chauffeur's license.
  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant construction work experience.
Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, And Skills

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the minimum knowledge, abilities, and skills.

Must be able to work in the following conditions
  • Primarily daytime work schedule but may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Occasional work in an enclosed area lacking windows.
  • Occasional indoor work exposed to dust, noise, dirt, heat, poor lighting, and other conditions.
  • Occasional outdoor work exposed to weather conditions such as heat, rain, wind, etc.
Other Requirements
  • Must successfully pass background check (pre and post-employment).
  • Must successfully pass alcohol and drug screening (pre and post-employment).
  • Regular, consistent, and punctual attendance.
Physical Demands

Position requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, picking, pinching, typing, and repetitive wrist and finger movements. Physical exertion up to 100 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 20 lbs constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions

Exposition to extreme heat (temperatures above 100°F for more than one hour), noise requiring shouting to be heard, vibration, proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, scaffolding and elevated work, chemicals, fumes, dust, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Work often occurs in narrow aisles, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, sewer and water line pipes, and other claustrophobic areas.
