Job summary

bpx energy is seeking a Construction Technician with an automation skillset to oversee instrumentation and electrical construction activities across Texas sites. The role ensures safety, quality, and schedule adherence while liaising with contractors, engineering, commissioning, and operations teams.

The technician will conduct site visits, QA/QC inspections, and support POL after start-up, while managing documentation and cost tracking to drive safe, cost-efficient project completion.

Qualifications

• Experience with electrical and instrumentation systems installation practices.
• Familiarity with NEC and safety protocols.
• Ability to read P&IDs, electrical schematics, and construction drawings.

Responsibilities

• Ensure contractors and crew comply with lifesaving rules, JSAs, LOTO, One Call clearances, and Ground Disturbance Permits.
• Manage I&E construction for new facilities and modifications, coordinating crew placement, COW, schedules, and contractor execution.
• Perform daily site visits, construction walkdowns, and QA/QC inspections to verify work meets specs and standards.
• Review P&ID and drawing changes and ensure as-built documentation is uploaded to Teams.
• Procure, receive, inspect, and track instruments, panels, and materials.
• Complete Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) I&E sections and verify testing and documentation before POL.
• Provide on-site commissioning and POL support, coordinating vendor start-up activities.
• Track daily project costs and identify cost-reduction opportunities without compromising safety or quality.
• Maintain OneNote project logs and handover notes across documentation.
• Coordinate with engineering, commissioning, operations, contractors, vendors, and SIMOPS support.
• Provide technical direction and mentoring to contract I&E specialists.

Construction Technician - Automation Skillset

ROLE SYNOPSIS

The Construction Technician is responsible for overseeing instrumentation and electrical construction activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards, quality specifications, and project schedules. This role serves as the primary liaison between contractors, engineering, commissioning, and operations to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective electrical and instrumentation systems.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Ensure contractors and crew members comply with lifesaving rules, contractor expectations, company safety requirements, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Lockout/Tagout (LO/TO), One Call clearances, and Ground Disturbance Permit requirements.
• Manage instrumentation and electrical (I&E) construction activities for new facilities and modifications, coordinating crew placement, Coordination of Work (COW), project schedules, and contractor execution.
• Perform daily site visits, construction walkdowns, and QA/QC inspections to verify work meets specifications, applicable standards, and project requirements and to prevent rework.
• Review and approve yellow-line/red-line markups, document P&ID and drawing changes, and ensure as-built documentation, I&E checklists, data sheets, and QA/QC records are uploaded to Teams.
• Procure, receive, inspect, organize, and track instruments, panels, specialty items, Artificial Lift equipment, consumables, and other construction materials.
• Complete Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) I&E sections and verify I&E testing and documentation are complete prior to Production On-Line (POL).
• Provide on-site commissioning and POL support, coordinate vendor start-up activities, and communicate with the Commissioning team regarding facility performance after start-up.
• Track daily project costs, contractor cost reports, material deliveries, and project status; identify cost-reduction opportunities without compromising safety or quality.
• Maintain current OneNote project logs, handover notes, phone lists, drawings, P&IDs, driving directions, and other project documentation.
• Coordinate effectively with engineering, commissioning, operations, Drilling and Completions, contractors, vendors, managers, and other stakeholders, including support for SIMOPS.
• Provide technical direction, mentoring, and coaching to contract I&E specialists on proper installation techniques, quality expectations, and safe work practices.
• Complete required VTA training, maintain current certifications, and stay current on applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

• Working knowledge of electrical and instrumentation systems, installation practices, and construction activities.
• Working knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC), Lockout/Tagout procedures, and applicable safety protocols.
• Ability to interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, construction drawings, and equipment documentation.
• Experience coordinating contractors, performing QA/QC inspections, maintaining project documentation, and tracking costs and materials.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

• Experience supporting I&E construction, pre-startup, commissioning, and Production On-Line (POL) activities.
• Experience coordinating contractors, vendors, engineering, commissioning, operations, and Drilling and Completions teams.
• Experience with project documentation and tracking tools, including Teams, OneNote, and cost-tracking applications.
