Job summary

Astec is seeking a field service professional to provide product and technical support for roadbuilding equipment. You will direct activities of technicians, coordinate installations, startups, and repairs, and ensure customer satisfaction across assigned product lines.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years in troubleshooting and installing heavy equipment, with strong mechanical and electrical skills, and the ability to travel to customer sites for hands-on training and service delivery.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years’ experience with troubleshooting, repair and installation of heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to read blueprints, electrical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical background with teamwork and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain equipment uptime and meet customer expectations for startups and repairs.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Provides customers and end users with product and technical support, directs and coordinates activities of workers engaged in the servicing and, Installation roadbuilding equipment and directs sales, distribution, and marketing operations of parts department in accordance with policies, principles and procedures established by department manager by performing the following duties.

Key Deliverables
  • Effectively communicate with customer to resolve any issues that may arise.
  • Provide quality customer service to all customers.
  • Inspect all defective products and figure out the root cause of the issue.
  • Provide customers on the proper Installation of equipment.
  • Develop and Implement work procedures.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
  • Communicate with customers regarding equipment Installation issues, time required to repair, etc.
  • Use resources to ensure that Construction department meets customer expectations with regard to startups and repairs
  • Ensure customer satisfaction through the maintenance of product up time to prescribed levels
  • Combine expert technical functional knowledge of equipment with customer application and use
  • Maintain high level of equipment up time through knowledge of products and customer requirements
  • Track performance against established measures and provides feedback to Construction management
  • Ensure adherence to procedures, roles and responsibilities through weekly and monthly reports
  • Accountable for maintaining the service level of assigned product lines completely and efficiently and in assigned territory if required
  • Schedule and successfully complete company-based technical service training programs for customer personnel in the operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Follow up with customers on startups and repairs when necessary
  • Inspect defective parts and components when necessary; communicates with vendors and purchasing department regarding component failures and defective parts; and advises upper management and engineering on product development issues and involves purchasing department when necessary regarding product problems identified through calls from Construction techs and customers in department manager's absence
  • Travel to customer job sites and home offices to promote good customer relations; participates in Key Account and other customer meetings when necessary; and assists in resolving customer controversies regarding equipment and/or installation issues.
  • Train customer personnel in the Installation and maintenance of Astec equipment
  • Set up and conduct tests under Installation conditions in order to correct or improve performance and other factors
  • Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts
  • Inspect used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements
  • Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments
  • Perform on-site welding and fabricating where required
  • Repair, rebuild or replace defective parts
  • Install special functional and structural parts in devices
  • Write complete and accurate Construction reports and submits to Construction department
  • Conduct meetings to keep Service & Construction Department personnel informed of policies and procedures when requested
  • Follow all company policies and procedures at all times
  • Follow proper safety procedures at all times
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required by company, customers and/or state DOTs
  • Clean work area daily
  • Perform other duties as assigned
To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • 5+ years’ experience in the troubleshooting, repair, and Installation of heavy construction equipment
  • Ability to conduct customer demonstrations of roadbuilding machinery within six (6) months of employment
  • Blueprint, electrical and hydraulic schematic reading, and interpretation skills
  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical background
  • Ability to work satisfactorily as a team player and communicate with all levels of employees
  • Strong interpersonal skills, communication, and presentation skills (both verbal and written)
  • Excellent customer-relations skills
  • Knowledge of basic computer/typing skills. Must possess potential to learn beyond basics, specifically Microsoft Office Suite software and AS400.
  • Ability to handle sudden changes in project/priority and multiple tasks simultaneously in a positive fashion
  • Ability to set, adjust and change daily priorities
  • Ability to manage conflict and resolve issues in the most positive fashion for all parties concerned
  • Ability to identify problems or potential problems at the functional level and make or recommend decisions to resolve the same
  • Good organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment on a customary and regular basis

Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times consistent with an industrial assembly facility and may require hearing protection.
