Job summary

VEIT is seeking a Traveling Heavy Civil/Mission Critical Project Engineer/QC or Field Engineer to manage field logistics and keep project teams aligned with engineering standards. You will work with project managers and superintendents to oversee field operations, coordinate with contractors, and produce reports for division leaders.

The role requires organizing submittals, schedules, permits, and change orders while maintaining safety and compliance on mission critical sites.

Responsibilities

  • Manages field logistics and coordinates with project managers and contractors.
  • Prepares and reviews supplier purchase orders and change orders.
  • Reviews contracts and ensures compliance with specifications.
  • Maintains accurate quantities for billing and communicates variances.
  • Documents submittals, RFIs, and logs for lead project manager.
  • Schedules meetings, tracks permits, and manages delivery schedules.
  • Coordinates safety observations and site cleanliness.
  • Drafts subcontracts and POs and ensures finalization before work begins.
  • Interacts with clients, owners, vendors, and field staff to maintain relationships.
  • Assists with estimating tasks, take-offs, and bid preparation.
  • Contributes to project deliverables such as QA/QC plans and test procedures.
  • Supports business development activities as needed.

Job Description

The Traveling Heavy Civil/Mission Critical Project Engineer/QC or Field Engineer is responsible for managing the field logistics and updating company project managers and contractors to ensure the mission critical projects comply with all engineering standards, codes and specifications. This position works with Project Managers and Superintendents to provide direction and support in managing operations, overseeing the logistics of the job, as well as generating reports for division leaders.

A Day in the Life
  • Manages plan grid and heavy job for project work accuracy, monitor projects costs to stay within budget.
  • Prepares, reviews, and approves supplier purchase orders.
  • Understands the owner contract and subcontract documents to understand the inclusions/exclusions for the purpose of invoice payment.
  • Validates, reconciles, and maintains accurate quantities for billing purposes and communicates differences to project management.
  • Identifies out of scope work for the purpose of changes orders.
  • Produce drafts, manage and maintain project submittal/RFI/ logs for lead project manager.
  • Schedule, facilitate and manage Gopher 1 tickets.
  • Schedule and lead private utility meetings and document conversations to communicate with office personnel.
  • Prepare change orders, manage trucking logs and invoice approval.
  • Perform on-site safety observations.
  • Identifies, completes, and applies for local permits.
  • Attends meetings as required with clients, owners and project teams.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationship with client, subcontractor, vendors, land-owners, suppliers, etc.
  • Develop and oversee the job site-specific requirements relating to safety, site cleanliness, manage delivery schedules, etc.
  • Organize and ensure proper documentation and drawing distribution to staff and field personnel.
  • Assist in the production and processing of Project deliverables such as Safety and QA/QC plans, and test procedures.
  • Assist in drafting subcontractor/P.O agreements and ensure all subcontract agreements are finalized before work begins.
  • Plan and coordinate the engineering deliverables from various parties.
  • Ability to independently perform tasks assigned with instructions as to the expected general results.
  • Track productions to produce project activity profiles.
  • Proactively work with Project Management, Field Supervisory, and Client teams to identify and analyze potential risks and impacts to the project schedule.
  • Assist with job site duties to keep job site facilities functioning correctly.
  • Assist with Estimating duties including but not limited to take-offs, solicitations to subcontractors/suppliers/bid, and quote preparation/bid running.
  • Participate in business development events.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by management.

What Will Set You Apart
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering or related field; 1-3 years of estimating and managing projects experience in related scope of work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience using construction software is a plus.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret project plans and specifications.
Other
  • Must have a clean Motor Vehicle record.
  • Requires 8 to 10-hour hour workdays, Monday – Friday.
  • Travel requirement is 80% to mission critical job sites.
Physical Demands

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those employees may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Employee is exposed to environmental conditions, working near machines and loud noises associated with construction sites. Exposed to variable weather conditions including rain, snow, wind, cold and heat. Also exposed to variable terrain.
