Job summary

SOCOTEC US is seeking a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Field & Laboratory Technician to perform field and laboratory testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate materials for commercial, residential, industrial, and public works projects. A blend of field inspection and lab work ensures project quality and compliance.

Responsibilities include recording observations, communicating results to project teams, and assisting with additional testing and documentation in support of QA/QC

Qualifications

• Experience in construction materials testing or related field preferred.
• Knowledge of ASTM/AASHTO testing procedures preferred.
• Ability to read construction plans, specs, and testing requirements.

Responsibilities

• Observe and document earthwork, foundations, paving, and concrete placement.
• Record field observations and test results accurately; maintain project documentation.
• Communicate testing results and project information to managers, contractors, and clients.
• Collect, transport, receive, sample, and prepare materials for laboratory testing.
• Perform laboratory testing such as Proctor, sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, and asphalt testing.
• Calculate, review, and report laboratory and field test results.
• Maintain testing equipment and laboratory facilities per quality and safety requirements.
• Follow safety procedures including radiation safety requirements.

Job description

We are seeking a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Field & Laboratory Technician to perform field and laboratory testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate materials in support of commercial, residential, industrial, and public works construction projects. This position offers a combination of field inspection and testing responsibilities along with laboratory testing and sample processing.

Responsibilities

• Perform field testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate materials in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and project specifications.
• Conduct soil density testing using nuclear density gauges and other field testing equipment.
• Perform concrete testing including slump, air content, temperature, and casting of compressive strength cylinders.
• Observe and document construction activities related to earthwork, foundations, paving, and concrete placement.
• Accurately record field observations, test results, and project documentation.
• Communicate testing results and project information to project managers, contractors, and clients.
• Collect, transport, receive, sample, and prepare materials for laboratory testing.
• Perform laboratory testing including Proctor compaction, sieve analysis, Atterberg Limits, sand equivalent, compression testing, aggregate testing, and asphalt testing.
• Calculate, review, and report laboratory and field test results.
• Maintain testing equipment, vehicles, and laboratory facilities in accordance with company quality and safety requirements.
• Follow company safety procedures and maintain compliance with radiation safety requirements.
• Assist with additional testing, inspection, and project-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Experience in construction materials testing, field inspection, laboratory testing, or a related construction field preferred.
• Knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and industry-standard testing procedures preferred.
• Ability to read construction plans, specifications, and testing requirements preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
• Strong mathematical skills with the ability to perform calculations and verify testing data.
• Ability to work independently in the field and as part of a team in a laboratory environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and electronic reporting systems.
• Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Preferred Certifications

• ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I
• ATTI/WAQTC/ASTM/AASHTO Soils and Aggregate Certification
• Radiation Safety Certification
• Nuclear Gauge Safety Certification
• Additional ICC, NICET, or construction inspection certifications are a plus
