Job summary

NexGen Contracting, the self-perform arm of Gray, is seeking a Construction Layout Manager-Concrete Division in Franklin, TN. Lead layout and field engineering across the region, managing multiple crews, reviewing drawings, and ensuring accuracy and compliance with specs.

Ideal candidates will have 7+ years in field engineering/layout, strong proficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D/BIM, Bluebeam and Procore, and be able to travel up to 75%. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of field engineering or construction layout experience; 3+ years leading a survey crew or layout lead.
  • Expert with survey equipment and Total Stations (Sokkia preferred; Leica/Topcon/Trimble).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or BIM software; ability to extract coordinates from drawings.
  • Proficient in Bluebeam and Procore.
  • Strong ability to read structural, architectural, and civil drawings.
  • Strong leadership and communication; willing to travel up to 75%.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all layout and field engineering work across the assigned region, overseeing multiple layout crews.
  • Perform and direct line and grade work for building layout and control as required.
  • Review work to confirm it is placed accurately and within tolerance.
  • Review contract drawings, specs, and shop drawings for coordination.
  • Identify and resolve drawing discrepancies before execution.
  • Establish tolerance checklists and document as-built work.
  • Assist and train personnel on proper as-builts.
  • Prepare drawings to support change orders, RFIs, submittals, and coordination.
  • Resolve tolerance disputes and field challenges with sound judgment.
  • Work with safety, QA/QC, field ops, and project management for success.
  • Forecast crew needs with Field Operations Manager and standardize practices.
  • Maintain high safety and quality standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or another relevant field of study; or equivalent combination of education and field experience.
  • Seven or more years of field engineering or construction layout experience, with three or more years managing a survey crew or serving as a layout lead.
  • Expert with survey equipment and Total Stations (Sokkia preferred; Leica, Topcon, Trimble).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or BIM software, including the ability to extract coordinate points directly from drawings.
  • Proficient in Bluebeam and Procore software.
  • Highly skilled at reading and understanding structural, architectural, and civil drawings.
  • Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills, with the ability to manage diverse teams across multiple jobsites.
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to perform in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
  • Must be able to travel up to 75% of the time.

What we expect… (Essential Functions)
  • Lead all layout and field engineering work across the assigned region, overseeing multiple layout crews and allocating personnel and equipment across concurrent projects.
  • Perform and direct line and grade work for building layout and control as required.
  • Review work as it is being placed to confirm it is performed accurately and within tolerance.
  • Review contract drawings, specifications, and shop drawings to ensure proper coordination and installation.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in drawings prior to execution.
  • Establish tolerance checklists and direct detailed as-built documentation across the region.
  • Assist and train personnel to prepare proper as-builts.
  • Prepare drawings and sketches to support Superintendents and Project Managers with change orders, RFIs, submittals, and other project coordination needs.
  • Resolve tolerance disputes and overcome jobsite challenges through sound technical judgment.
  • Work closely with our safety, QA/QC, field operations, and project management teams to ensure project success.
  • Partner with the Field Operations Manager to forecast crew needs, standardize practices, and build out the field engineering layer across the division.
  • Establish and maintain high safety and quality standards in accordance with company and industry standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Manage field engineers, layout leads, and survey crews across the assigned region. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training team members; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining team members; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
