Job summary

Certerra-RMA Group in Nashville, TN seeks a Construction Lab/Field Project Manager to supervise laboratory and field staff, coordinate testing and inspection of soils, concrete, asphalt, and other materials, and ensure data quality and compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, and DOT standards.

The role requires 5–10 years in construction materials testing, 2–3 years of supervision, a relevant degree, and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of progressive experience in construction materials testing and inspection.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of supervisory or leadership experience in materials testing/QA.
  • Thorough knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, ICC and DOT standards.
  • Experience reviewing technical reports and ensuring data quality.
  • Proficiency with laboratory management systems and MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of laboratory and field technicians performing construction materials testing and inspection services.
  • Manage testing operations involving soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, masonry, and other construction materials per standards.
  • Review, verify, and approve testing data, reports, and documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Schedule personnel and allocate resources to support project demands and client deadlines.
  • Monitor technician performance and provide coaching, training, and mentorship for career growth.
  • Ensure laboratory and field operations comply with quality management systems and accreditation requirements.
  • Oversee calibration/maintenance/inventory of equipment.
  • Assist project managers and engineers with planning, staffing, budgeting, and problem-solving.
  • Serve as a technical resource for clients and regulatory agencies.

Education

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Geology, or related field
Minimum 2–3 years supervisory or leadership experience
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
Proficiency with laboratory management systems and Microsoft Office
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record

Job Summary:
  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of laboratory and field technicians performing construction materials testing and inspection services.
  • Manage testing operations involving soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, masonry, and other construction materials in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and project-specific requirements.
  • Review, verify, and approve testing data, reports, and documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Schedule personnel and allocate resources to support project demands and client deadlines.
  • Monitor technician performance and provide coaching, training, and mentorship to promote technical development and career growth.
  • Ensure laboratory and field operations comply with company quality management systems, accreditation requirements, and industry standards.
  • Oversee calibration, maintenance, and inventory of laboratory and field-testing equipment.
  • Assist project managers and engineers with project planning, staffing, budgeting, and technical problem-solving.
  • Serve as a technical resource for clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders.
  • Identify non-conforming materials, testing discrepancies, and quality concerns, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Promote and enforce company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support audits, accreditation reviews, and inspections conducted by clients, DOT agencies, and accreditation organizations.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required. An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Geology, or a related fieldpreferred.
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of progressive experience in construction materials testing and inspection.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of supervisory or leadership experience within a materials testing, geotechnical, or construction quality control environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, ICC, and applicable state DOT standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and personnel simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Experience reviewing technical reports and ensuring data quality.
  • Proficiency with laboratory management systems, electronic reporting software, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Certifications:

Candidates possessing multiple certifications are strongly preferred

  • NICET Level III or IV in Construction Materials Testing
  • ICC Special Inspector Certifications
  • State DOT certifications for soils, concrete, aggregate, and asphalt testing
  • Nuclear Density Gauge Safety Certification
  • Laboratory Quality Systems or Laboratory Management training
  • Additional technical certifications related to geotechnical engineering, construction inspection, or quality assurance
Leadership & Management Responsibilities:
  • Direct and supervise laboratory and field personnel to ensure efficient project execution.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and participate in hiring, onboarding, and employee development activities.
  • Establish and maintain a culture focused on safety, quality, accountability, and customer service.
  • Monitor workload distribution and staffing needs to maximize operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with project managers and department leadership to achieve operational and financial goals.
  • Assist in developing and implementing standard operating procedures and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, accreditation requirements, and industry best practices.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perform occasional field testing and inspections on active construction sites.
  • Ability to lift and carry testing equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and traverse uneven terrain when necessary.
  • Ability to travel locally to project sites and client locations.
