Job summary

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company is seeking undergraduates for a hands-on internship spanning 10-12 weeks. You will assist project teams across all phases from bidding to final completion, with assignments at both the office and job site, including possible relocation to remote sites.

Housing may be provided in certain situations. You will report to various project managers or engineers and gain experience in quantity take-off, layout, surveys, RFIs, submittals, coordination, and project

Qualifications

• Open to undergraduate students seeking hands-on experience in construction.
• Candidates should be pursuing a BS in an engineering discipline, engineering technology or construction management.

Responsibilities

• Learn engineering and technical aspects on field and office.
• Assist with quantity take-offs, layout, surveys, shop drawing reviews, and logs.
• Review submittals and RFIs and maintain logs.
• Coordinate with owner, architect and subcontractors through meetings.
• Assist with bidding, documenting revisions, estimates and project management.
• Support with purchasing, scheduling, safety, quality control, and closeout.

What It Takes

Open to undergraduate students interested in gaining hands‑on practical experience in the construction field. Qualified applicants will assist project teams in managing construction projects/ including all phases from bidding to final completion.

• Assignments include office and job site; relocation to a remote sites may be required.
• Transportation is required.
• Work periods are 10-12 weeks; 40 hours/week.

Intern Job Description

Reporting Relationship: Depending on the work assignment, interns will report to a project manager, superintendent, project engineer or field engineer. You may be assigned to the office, jobsite or mix of both.

Tasks Assigned: You will be learning the engineering and technical aspects of the project both in the field and in the office. Your experience will include some or all the following:

• Quantity take-off
• Layout
• Preconstruction/as-built surveys
• Shop drawing review/approval & maintenance of log
• Submittal review/approval & maintenance of log
• Request for information (RFI) review/submission & maintenance of log
• Responding to subcontractor RFIs
• Interfacing with subcontractors & suppliers
• Attending weekly progress meetings
• Assisting with coordinating the work between the owner, architect & subcontractors
• Assisting during the bid process
• Assist with reviewing construction documents & specifications
• Assisting with reviewing all document revisions & clarifications
• Assisting with maintaining field record
• Assisting with estimates/budgets/value engineering/constructability surveys Assist with writing contracts & purchase orders
• Assisting with preparing billings to owner & submitting change ordersAssisting with approval of invoices
• Assisting with ordering & expediting materials
• Assisting with scheduling & updates
• Assisting with quality control & safety

Education
