The City of Spring Hill Kansas is seeking a Construction Inspector to supervise grading operations and conduct inspections of sidewalks, streets, and public utilities. You will review engineering plans, act as a liaison between contractors, city staff, and residents, and assist with emergency operations as needed.
Ideal candidates have strong math and technical reading skills, knowledge of public works practices, and ability to work with multiple stakeholders under evolving priorities.
Under the supervision of the City Engineer, the Construction Inspector is a non-exempt position under FLSA. The Construction Inspector oversees grading operations; conducts construction inspections of sidewalks, streets, curbs, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water mains, and other public infrastructure to ensure compliance with city ordinances, construction plans and specifications; participates in the review of engineering construction plans; acts as a liaison between contractors, city staff, and citizens; assists with emergency operations, including snow removal operations, as required. The City Inspector must have the ability to multi-task and perform job functions with evolving priorities as well as establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships.

Minimum 5 years (Construction Inspector II) and minimum 7 years (Construction Inspector III) of increasingly responsible inspection experience on civil engineering related projects required
Possess basic math skills. Ability to read and understand technical specifications, laws, and codes as they relate to capital improvement projects. Knowledge of modern public works practices, materials, methods, and safety hazards, as well as contract administration procedures and material testing and sampling procedures. Skill in computer applications such as word processing, accounting spreadsheets, scheduling, etc. used in construction and construction management. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness with the public, employees, and other City officials. Ability to work independently.
Technical Skills: This employee must be able to operate computers, photocopiers and other office equipment. This employee should possess strong analytical, research, public relation, organizational, oral and written communication skills. Ability to safely operate a City vehicle and other equipment to perform job duties.
Intellectual Aptitude: Ability to read and comprehend city, state and federal regulations. Ability to work on several projects at once and to recognize and protect confidential information. Ability to understand and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, and layouts to ensure compliance with specifications and other requirements.
Problem Solving: Problem solving is a factor in this position.
Decision Making: Makes decisions related to project inspections and performing daily duties in a safe and efficient manner.
Supervision: This employee works with supervision from the City Engineer.
Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment, may have limited authority to purchase necessary department supplies but does not participate in the annual budget process.
Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, contractors, consultants and Directors. Occasional contact with the Governing Body may be expected.
