Job description

RK&K's Construction Engineering Inspection and Construction Management Division is hiring entry to mid-level Construction Inspectors in and around the Hampton Roads, VA area. This role will primarily perform work in VDOT's Hampton Roads District, adjacent Districts as well as localities including Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Williamsburg, Emporia, and Suffolk. As a Construction Inspector with RK&K, you will apply your knowledge of construction, safety, quality, and materials to provide critical inspection services on heavy civil construction sites, including highway, bridge, and design-build projects. Essential Functions

1. Provide construction management support, including inspection and monitoring of roadway and structure construction to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety regulations.
2. Engage in solving complex problems to provide technical evaluation and sound solutions.
3. Monitor and document contractor activities; communicate and document non-compliant work elements.
4. Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment.
5. Review material placement and conduct materials testing as required.
6. Communicate effectively with project management, clients, stakeholders, and contractors across different platforms.
7. Interface with clients, state and federal agencies, and other engineering disciplines on construction projects.
8. Perform field measurements and track daily quantities of work items installed.
9. Maintain comprehensive project records and reporting as required.

Required Skills and Experience

1. Three (3) years of relevant experience in materials, standards, and specifications related to state highway projects and facilities.
2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
3. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including algebra and geometry.
4. Proficient in computer software such as Microsoft Office and other construction documentation tools.
5. Ability to work independently on small construction projects.
6. Ability to pass Criminal History Background Check (CHBC).
7. Acceptable driving record.
8. High School Diploma or GED.

Certifications Required

1. VDOT Required Material Certifications or ability to obtain within 6 months, including NICET Level II in Soil and Aggregate Compaction, VDOT Asphalt Field Level I & II, NICET Level II in Concrete, VDOT Pavement Marking, VDOT Slurry Surfacing, VDOT Surface Treatment, VDOT Flagger Certification, VDOT GRIT, VA DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection, Stormwater Management Inspector Certification, Nuclear Gauge Safety Training, ATTSA Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control, and OSHA 10-hour Safety Training.

Preferred Skills and Experience

1. Experience in roadway, asphalt, concrete, pavement markings, structure, and bridge construction inspection.
2. Experience with VDOT and other public agencies preferred.
3. Experience with construction document management software such as PlanGrid, AWP, and SharePoint.
4. Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field.
