Job summary

SSC Inc, a civil engineering and program management firm, seeks Construction Inspectors to support LAWA’s Tenant Improvement Program across multiple projects focused on building disciplines in Los Angeles.

Qualifications

  • Confined space awareness certification.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect airport improvements and utilities to ensure conformance with plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, and agreements.
  • Document daily progress, prepare monthly payment requests, track changes, verify time-and-material work, and measure job quantities.
  • Review construction documents including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
  • Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and LAWA stakeholders, and communicate findings.
  • Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports documenting the who, what, when, where, and how of observed activities.

With offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle, SSC delivers hands‑on inspection and construction oversight on complex capital programs, including ongoing support to LAWA's Terminal Development and Improvement Program.

We are seeking experienced Construction Inspectors to support LAWA's Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within LAWA's Tenant Improvement Program, primarily focusing on building disciplines.

Description of Duties

Inspects the construction of a wide variety of airport improvements and utilities projects to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, and agreements for work, and may provide construction inspection support. Documents daily progress of the work, prepares monthly progress payment requests, tracks various changes, verifies time-and-material work, and measures and documents job quantities. Documentation and information retrieval may require computer literacy skills.

Construction Inspectors must have the ability to set priorities, make decisions, and work effectively with minimal supervision; the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with LAWA stakeholders, contractors, construction workers, and the public; and must conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.

Position Summary

The Construction Inspector will support LAWA's construction inspection efforts as a member of the LAWA Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within LAWA's Tenant Improvement Program, primarily focusing on building disciplines. Specific expectations include:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience performing inspection.
  • Clear understanding and interpretation of LA City Building Code and ADA requirements.
  • Ability to pass a background check and possess a LAWA SIDA badge prior to official start.
  • Ability to walk extremely long distances during the shift, as this is the primary means of traversing between expansive terminals.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffold, and crawl into areas associated with the work taking place in the terminals.
  • Ability to work day, swing, modified, or night shifts, including weekends, as dictated by the contractor's schedule.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma (or equivalent)
  • Experience: Five (5) or more years performing inspection of large-scale public works type projects
  • Training / Certifications:Cal-OSHA 30-hour training completed within the last 4 years, prior to assignment
  • Training in the use of fall protection equipment and harness with lanyard
  • Confined space awareness certification
  • NFPA 70E certification required for electrical inspectors
Preferred & Desired Qualifications
  • Aviation and airport construction inspection experience is strongly desired, including familiarity with active airfield environments, terminal construction, and coordination within a secured airport (SIDA/badged) setting.
  • ICC certifications and Deputy Inspector licenses preferred but not required.
  • Good knowledge and ability to inspect large‑scale construction of airport and public building facilities — which may include steel and concrete structures, architectural finishes and components, and other construction related to airport terminal operations — to ensure conformance with safety regulations, plans, specifications, and other applicable documents.
  • Good knowledge of LA City building codes and ADA requirements, with experience including (but not limited to) inspecting demolition and the construction of buildings from start to finish.
  • Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies, ensuring all aspects of construction meet required standards.
  • A strong understanding of diverse requirements.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Conduct comprehensive daily inspections across building and terminal construction projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and project specifications; review and interpret construction documents including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
  • Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports that clearly document the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW of all observed construction activities — ensuring accuracy, clarity, and accountability in tracking progress and identifying issues, deficiencies, or safety concerns in a timely manner.
  • Verify contractor compliance with the local jurisdiction's requirements, building codes, and LAWA-specific proprietary standards.
  • Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third‑party agencies as needed.
  • May be tasked to track and document time‑and‑material work, field changes, and job quantities.
  • May be tasked to assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values.
  • May be assigned to a program where the inspector prepares monthly progress payment requests, tracks changes, verifies time‑and‑material work, and measures and documents job quantities, requiring the ability to write clear and concise documents depicting daily progress of the work.
Perform inspections related to building construction including, but not limited to:
  • Clearing, grubbing, and demolition of building structures
  • Excavations, trenching, and shoring
  • Grade and elevation survey
  • Structural backfill and compaction for underground utilities
  • Structural and nonstructural concrete work
  • Formwork, footings, and micro piles
  • Sewer and storm drain inspection
  • Metal stud framing, drywall installation, and interior finishes
  • Door and hardware with its components
  • T-bar ceilings, hard lids, and other fire‑rated components
Hardware / Software Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Project Management Information software used for inspection and document control (e.g., Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PMWeb, Adobe Pro, Bluebeam).
  • Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic equipment for contract documents efficiently — including change orders, submittals, RFIs, and other inspection documents — with minimal supervision.
Education / Training
  • High school diploma (or equivalent)
Element‑Specific Requirements / Notes
  • May assume other duties as required.
  • May be required to work various shifts, including day, swing, and night.
  • Shall be open to modified schedules, including nights and weekends, as dictated by contractor work activities and accelerated project schedules.
  • Availability to work overtime as required to meet project deadlines is preferred
