Qualifications

Responsibilities

Overview

GFT is seeking a Construction Engineering Inspector to join our Construction Services team in Newport News, Norfolk, VA or Virginia Beach, VA.

What You Will Do

As an engineering inspector, you will receive exceptional training and career development opportunities and work under the direct supervision of experienced field engineers on challenging construction projects.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect water and sewer main line construction projects, including new water and sewer lateral connections, renewals, water main rehabilitation (cleaning and lining), sewer and manhole rehabilitation, paving, sod and landscaping restoration.
  • Inspect sewer pumping station projects and associated force mains and outfall sewers.
  • Inspect pipe installations and approve materials on-site for quality; report defects and have the authority to reject materials and workmanship.
  • Make decisions relative to the intent of standard specifications or standard details with concurrence from the Project/Construction Manager.
  • Observe compaction testing of backfilled soils during and after completion of the work.
  • Coordinate water main shutdowns, locate and operate valves, perform chlorination sampling, and manage other items necessary for contract execution.
  • Verify grading and alignment of water mains, sewer lines, and appurtenances to meet contract requirements.
  • Advise contractors of deviations from contract provisions and assist in proper performance of work.
  • Ensure compliance with safety precautions and proper traffic control.
  • Use cloud-based construction management software to document contractor activities and progress through daily reports and digital as-builts for accurate payment and claim evaluation.
  • Perform visual sewer main and manhole final inspections, oversee sewer air and mandrel testing, televising of sewer lateral connections, hydrostatic testing of water mains, and prepare reports of findings.
  • Inspect restoration of areas disturbed during construction.
  • Attend pre-construction meetings and monthly progress meetings with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Travel to daily job sites using a personal vehicle.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • May be exposed to seasonal temperatures.
  • May require entry into confined spaces (large pipes, manholes, vaults).
  • Exposure to loud noises, fumes, odors, and limited ventilation; use of personal protective equipment as required.
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
Education | Experience

What you will bring to our firm:

  • Knowledge of and experience with new and rehabilitative pipeline construction and construction practices, procedures, and materials such as Open-Cut, Pipe Bursting, Horizontal Direction Drilling, Jack and Bore, Tunnelling, CIPP Lining, Sliplining, Centrifugal Cast Concrete Pipe, Cleaning and Lining.
  • Knowledge of soil compaction and testing methods.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, sediment control devices, and traffic control standards.
  • Knowledge of concrete placement.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and contract documents; experience with Standard Specifications and Standard Details.
  • Ability to compute volumes and quantities for construction materials; interpret survey field notes.
  • Prepare accurate, detailed reports of daily project progress; effective verbal and written communication; team-oriented.
  • Willingness to enter confined spaces and work outdoors in inclement weather; climb in and out of ditches and other structures under construction.
  • Knowledge of computer programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with Erosion and Sedimentation Control.

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of experience in construction inspection and/or construction/installation of underground water and sewer projects.

What we prefer you bring:

One or more of the following industry certifications are preferred but not required. GFT will provide training for certain certifications to comply with project requirements.

  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Field Technician certification
  • MARTCP Soils & Aggregate Technician
  • MDE Responsible Person Card (Erosion and Sedimentation Control) certification
  • MDE Water distribution Operator's License or Waste Water collections license
  • NASSCO ITCP-CIPP, PACP, MACP & LACP certifications
  • MDOT SHA Temporary Traffic Control certification
  • OSHA 10-hour safety certification
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary range: $65,000 - $85,000, dependent on experience and geographic location.
