Job summary

Precision Systems, Inc. is seeking a Construction Inspector with 3+ years of highway inspection experience in Virginia, including potential VDOT work.

You will inspect roadway, structure and bridge construction, monitor contractor performance, and ensure adherence to plans, specs, and safety standards. The role supports multiple phases of road projects, requiring field measurements, documentation, and coordination with contractors and agency staff.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of highway construction inspection experience.
  • Knowledge of VDOT Road and Bridge Standards, Specifications and Manuals.
  • VDOT Certifications in asphalt, concrete, pavement or related areas.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and symbols.

  • Proficient with field management software; valid driving record.
  • Willingness to work day or night as required.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor contractor work to ensure quality control and contract compliance on roadway, structure and bridge projects from routine to moderate complexity.
  • Inspect excavations, drainage facilities, road surfaces, and structures.
  • Document contractor daily production rates and quantities.
  • Coordinate work schedules with contractor and agency personnel.
  • Communicate non-compliant work and field-condition changes; take field measurements for pay items.
  • Review and test construction materials for compliance.
  • Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey tools.
  • Enforce erosion/siltation controls and highway work zones and traffic control devices.
  • Suggest plan changes to meet field conditions and cost savings.
  • Maintain project records: diaries, logs, as-built plans, pay quantities, monthly estimates.

Who You Are

Precision Systems is seeking to hire a Construction Inspector with knowledge and experience of construction standards and practices. The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of experience performing construction inspection within Virginia that may include work for VDOT. The Construction Inspector will inspect all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects under the general supervision of senior or supervisory staff, ensuring construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications and providing a quality transportation system for the traveling public.


Responsibilities


  • To monitor the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance projects of routine to moderate complexity, under the direction of a Construction Manager or designee on VDOT projects

  • Inspects and monitors contractual field work which includes excavations, drainage facilities, road surfaces, and structures

  • Observes and documents Contractor’s daily production rates

  • Schedules work and inspection phases with Contractor’s superintendent and agency personnel

  • Observes, documents and communicates with Contractor’s regarding completion of all elements of project work to include identifying non-compliant work
    Takes field measurements of pay items

  • Reviews placement of and performs tests on construction materials

  • Reviews lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment

  • Oversees and enforces the installation of erosion/siltation controls and highways work zones and traffic control devices

  • Recommends changes to construction plans to meet field conditions or provide project cost savings

  • Maintains project records; including daily diaries, materials notebooks, as-built plans, pay quantity records, and monthly estimates


Qualifications

The Construction Inspector is expected to have a minimum of three years of highway construction inspection experience as well as working knowledge of:



  • Experience with roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance/repair/rehabilitation methods, materials, standards and specifications

  • Knowledge of VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications, Road and Bridge Standards, Construction Manual, Inspector Manual, and Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices

  • VDOT Certifications related to asphalt, concrete, pavement, inspection or other areas required

  • Knowledge of Construction plans, symbols, and terminology

  • State and federal environmental, safety, and Equal Employment Opportunity guidelines and regulations

  • Use of the Department’s contract management software

  • Maintains a good driving record

  • Offers flexibility in working day or night as project require

  • Is able to lift at least 50 pounds


The Construction Inspector is expected to have the ability to:



  • Functional computer usage including familiarity with Microsoft office suite software and all construction management software systems used by the Department

  • Read and interpret roadway, structure and bridge plans and specification

  • Apply mathematical formulas and field management principles to determine minor field adjustments

  • Maintain detailed records

  • Perform and document required materials testing

  • Communicate with the agency and contractor personnel and the general public


It is anticipated that the Department will require Construction Inspector positions with various combinations of certifications throughout the life of this contract. The specific certifications required for a given task will be identified by the Department at the time the task is assigned.


Completion of the Inspector Trainee program may substitute one year of experience.
