Job summary

Preferred Builders Inc is seeking an experienced Construction Estimator to establish estimating processes and guide bid strategies for residential and commercial projects in the Sacramento area. This role offers hybrid/remote work within a growing family-run business.

You will handle takeoffs, subcontractor quotes, and risk analyses from review to submission, coordinating with owners, architects, and trades to ensure accurate, competitive bids and timely proposals.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of experience in construction estimating or related project cost management roles.
• Ability to read and interpret detailed construction drawings, blueprints, and project specifications.
• Proficiency with industry-standard estimating, takeoff, and project management software (e.g., Buildertrend).
• Strong mathematical and analytical problem-solving abilities in general construction.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for client and subcontractor negotiations.

Responsibilities

• Prepare precise cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor proposals for residential and commercial builds.
• Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and identify risks or cost variances before bids.

How You Will Make An Impact

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Solid hands-on experience using industry-standard estimating, takeoff, and project management software (ex: Buildertrend)
• Demonstrated mathematical skills and analytical problem-solving capabilities within general construction.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills needed for effective client and subcontractor negotiations.
• Proficiency in Excel

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

• 5+ years of experience in construction estimating or related project cost management roles.
• Associate degree in Construction Management, Building Technology, or a related field.
• Experience developing estimating systems, processes, and cost databases from the ground up in a startup environment.
• Deep knowledge of localized material costs, subcontractor networks, and labor markets across the greater Sacramento region.
• Previous project management experience—or an interest in developing and taking on project management responsibilities is a plus.
