Job summary

Kay & Co is seeking an experienced estimator to lead from early budgets through hard bid for complex sitework and building projects across Massachusetts. You will perform detailed takeoffs, review specifications for risk, and manage subcontractor pricing to deliver competitive, accurate bids.

The role requires strong MA public bid knowledge (Chapter 149/30 a plus), and the ability to build estimates from the ground up using Bluebeam, HCSS HeavyBid, or similar tools.

Qualifications

• Experience estimating for general or civil contracting.
• Public bid experience in Massachusetts (Chapter 149/30) is a plus.
• Ability to perform takeoffs and build estimates from ground up.

Responsibilities

• Lead estimates from early budgets through hard bid.
• Perform quantity takeoffs and build detailed sitework/concrete estimates.
• Review plans and specs, identify risks and write bid qualifications.
• Solicit and compare subcontractor and supplier pricing including sub bids.
• Calculate production rates and self-performed costs with operations.
• Attend prebid meetings and site walks.
• Hand off projects to PM team after award.
• Help shape which bids the company pursues.

Our client has been building across Massachusetts for more than 75 years. They began in site work and have grown into one of the go to firms for complex public and private projects, including mixed-use buildings, parks and athletic facilities, water treatment plants, specialty infrastructure projects and industrial buildings.

What you’ll be doing

• Leading estimates from early budgets through to hard bid
• Doing quantity takeoffs and building detailed estimates for sitework, concrete and general building scopes
• Reviewing plans and specs, spotting risk and writing clear bid qualifications
• Asking for, chasing and comparing subcontractor and supplier pricing, including filed sub bids
• Working out production rates and self performed costs with the operations team
• Going to prebid meetings and site walks
• Handing projects over properly to the PM team once they’re won
• Helping shape which bids the company goes after

What they’re looking for

• Estimating experience with a general or civil contractor
• Strong Massachusetts public bid experience (Chapter 149 and 30) - is not essential but a bonus
• Confident doing your own takeoffs and building estimates from the ground up
• Experience with estimating software such as Bluebeam, HCSS HeavyBid, On Screen Takeoff or similar
• A degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or similar, or equivalent experience
