Job summary

TMG Construction is hiring an entry-level Construction Engineer I to assist in project management and field operations for multiple projects within a designated area. The role involves estimating, scheduling, document control, RFIs, shop drawings, and coordination with subcontractors and field teams.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management or related experience, strong communication, and the ability to travel to job sites.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Engineering or Construction Management with 0–1 years in commercial/industrial GC, or 3 years related exp w/o degree.
  • Solid understanding of construction methods for renovations of commercial/institutional buildings.
  • Proficient with spreadsheets, email, and construction software.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds and access job sites; climb stairs/ladders.
  • Clean driving record for material pickups.
  • Credentials: EIT or AC; OSHA 30, First Aid and CPR; USACE/NAVFAC CQC certification.
  • Grace period up to six months to obtain stated credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Support Project Manager/Superintendent in estimating, contracting, buyout, admin, and closeout of projects.
  • Create, update, and maintain project controls tracking changes, RFIs, shop drawings, submittals, quality, safety, and finances.
  • Coordinate with SMEs to review shop drawings and submittals documenting construction.
  • Assist change management: logs, vendor pricing, estimates, proposals, and change orders.
  • Assist estimating using digitizers, 3D modeling, and traditional methods to quantify work.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules using contemporary scheduling software.
  • Develop control drawings and CAD-generated dimensions to align work elements.
  • Support negotiating contracts, subcontracts, and purchase orders.
  • Produce reports using Project Center, USACE tools, Prolog, etc.
  • Identify issues early and propose solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with contract terms and legal requirements to prevent rework.
  • Interact with accounting, HR, ICS, and other support groups.
  • Contribute to project closeout activities and lifecycle learnings.
  • Assist in constructability reviews and value-engineering cost savings.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and industry networking.
  • Familiarize with PM/ Superintendent roles to grow into higher responsibilities.

Scope of Construction Engineer I Position

Assist and support all aspects of project management and field operations where necessary, for multiple small projects or a large project. Support the project management process by performing engineering tasks such as processing shop drawings, handling the workflow of RFI’s, document control, change management, outsourcing, estimating, scheduling, and other related activities.

Essential Functions of Construction Engineer I Position

Basic to a good understanding of the civil, architectural, mechanical, or electrical discipline. Good analytical skills and the ability to effectively use a variety of estimating, scheduling, and reporting software tools. The ability to effectively communicate with management, subcontractors, customers, and peer groups. Ability to travel to different job sites within a designated geographical area.

Construction Engineer I Responsibilities
  • Support the Project Manager, Superintendent, or other management roles in the construction process throughout all phases of the life cycle of a project, including estimating, negotiating, contracting, buyout, construction administration, and closeout of individual projects and/or task order projects at large.
  • Create, update, and maintain a variety of project controls that track the status of individual projects or task orders, changes to projects or task orders, RFI, shop drawings, and submittals, matters involving quality controls, safety, financial performance, close-out, and other aspects of the project(s) or task order(s);
  • Work with subject matter experts to create reviews and process shop drawings and other submittals that are required to document the construction process.
  • Support the change management process by updating logs, routing source documents to vendors, obtaining pricing, developing estimates and proposals, writing change orders, and other related activities.
  • Support the estimating process by performing quantity surveys utilizing digitizers, 3D modeling software, and paper-based processes that obtain and summarize the scope and quantities of work.
  • Establish, monitor, communicate, and maintain project schedules utilizing contemporary scheduling software.
  • Support the physical layout and an absolute understanding of the spatial relationships of the physical work: by developing control line drawings, using CAD to obtain additional dimensioning information, reviewing and coordinating shop drawings, and other activities that allow the various elements of work to correctly fit together.
  • Support the PM in negotiating contracts, subcontracts, and purchase orders.
  • Maintain and regularly produce reports utilizing TMG and client-specific workflow software such as TMG’s Project Center, USACE QCS/RMS, Prolog, etc.
  • Proactively identify issues that could lead to problems and facilitate solutions.
  • Develop an understanding of how to maintain and require compliance with all contract terms and legal requirements that govern the project to prevent rework and delays.
  • Provide timely and cordial interaction with supporting work groups, such as accounting, HR, ICS, etc.
  • Participate in managing activities that are related to project closeout to ensure timely completion.
  • Assist with the evaluation of projects for constructability and value-engineer cost savings.
  • Participate in life‑long learning opportunities and professional development.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and industry networking functions.
  • Familiarize oneself with the Project Manager or Superintendent Position Description and work deliberately to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to evolve into one of the stated roles.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Engineering or Construction Management with 0-1 years of experience with a commercial and/or industrial general contractor, or 3 years of directly related experience with no degree.
  • A basic understanding of construction means and methods associated with the renovation of commercial and institutional buildings and site work related thereto.
  • Solid understanding/proficiency with spreadsheets, Email, and other software used in the construction industry.
  • Must be able to lift and handle 50-pound objects;
  • Must be fully mobile and capable of walking job sites, climbing ladders and stairs multiple times daily to inspect work, direct subcontractors and TMG’s own field forces, and assure safety and quality control;
  • Must have a clean driving record to facilitate getting materials from suppliers when necessary.
  • Professional credentials – either Engineer in Training (EIT) or Associate Constructor (AC) in good standing.
  • Current safety credentials to include OSHA 30 1, 1st Aid, and CPR 1;
  • Current CQC certification issued by USACE / NAVFAC 1.

1 A grace period of up to six months may be allowed to obtain stated credentials.
