Travis County in Austin is seeking a lead Deputy Constable to perform timely service of criminal and civil processes and to enforce local, state, and federal laws, with minimal supervision.

This senior role includes overseeing a program detail, handling warrants, arrests, transport of prisoners, bailiffs, and collaborations with other agencies, requiring strong reporting and safety skills; bilingual Spanish preferred.

Qualifications

• Requires High School diploma or equivalency with no felony convictions.
• Must be at least 21 years old and honorably discharged from the military and any law enforcement agency; requires active TCOLE license.
• Under 21, must have 60+ college credits or 2 years military service with honorable discharge.
• Requires basic certification as a law enforcement officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement; requires two years of law enforcement experience.
• Preferred: Intermediate or higher TCOLE certification and Civil Process Proficiency certification; bilingual (Spanish).

Responsibilities

• Enforce local, state and federal laws and serve as liaison to other agencies and the public.
• Seize property under court orders and hold auction on levied property.
• Enforce school attendance laws as required.
• Respond to inquiries and liaison with agencies and the public.
• Transport prisoners to jail and may transport persons to mental institutions.
• Serve warrants and make arrests.
• Act as bailiff for Justice of the Peace court.
• Respond to major emergencies and disasters.
• Assist with decisions concerning a law enforcement unit and train new Deputy Constables.
• Deliver and execute civil process papers; maintain records.
• Provide building security and inspect persons.
• Possibly perform traffic-related functions.
• Check titles/serial numbers on vehicles and search for missing persons.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Performs timely service of all criminal and civil processes issued by the courts and enforces local, state and federal laws. This classification serves as a lead/senior level and/or oversees a special detail of a program within the constable's office and engages in investigatory duties with minimal supervision as required by the department.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This job is within the Non-TCSO POPS job family. It is a second level job within the uniformed Constable series. This job is distinguished from the Deputy Constable job by the additional experience and testing required to obtain this level.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Enforce local, state and federal laws and serve as a liaison to other agencies and the public
• Seize property under court orders and hold auction on levied property
• Enforce local, state, federal, and compulsory school attendance laws as required
• Respond to inquiries and serve as liaison to other agencies and the public
• Transport prisoners to jail and may transport persons committed to mental institutions to state hospital
• Serve warrants, make arrests
• Serve as a bailiff for Justice of the Peace court
• Respond to major emergencies and disasters
• Assist with decisions concerning a law enforcement unit, and train, educate and assist new Deputy Constables
• Deliver and execute civil process papers; maintain records and files of executions received
• Provide building security services and person inspections
• May perform traffic related functions
• Check title and serial numbers on vehicles, maintain patrol vehicles, and search for missing persons
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience: Requires a High School diploma or equivalency certificate with no felony convictions; must be at least 21 years of age; must be honorably discharged from the military and any law enforcement agency; requires active TCOLE license; if under 21, must have 60+ hours of accredited college credits or 2 years of military service with honorable discharge.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements: Requires basic certification as a law enforcement officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement; requires two (2) years of law enforcement experience.

Preferred Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements

• Intermediate or higher law enforcement officer certification from TCOLE
• Civil Process Proficiency certification from TCOLE
