Job summary

Hennepin County Medical Center is seeking a Radiologic Technician for its Computed Tomography department. This role involves performing CT exams under a licensed medical practitioner's order while ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout the procedure.

Job description

This position is located at Hennepin Healthcare, an integrated healthcare system that includes a Level I adult and pediatric trauma center, an acute care hospital, and a network of primary care clinics across Minneapolis and the surrounding communities.

Job Details

Department: Computed Tomography (CT)

FTE: 0.9 (72 hours per pay period)

Workdays: Monday – Friday, Monday – Thursday

Shift(s): Evenings (1:30 pm – 10:00 pm)

Shift Length: 8 hours

Location: In-Person

Sign‑On Bonus: $10,000 – available for eligible external candidates (current employees, contract/temporary workers, and former employees returning to HHS within one year are ineligible).

Responsibilities

• Perform Computed Tomography exams under the order of a licensed medical practitioner.
• Follow ALARA principle; modify radiation dose for individual patient exams in accordance with established age/weight‑specific protocols, including pediatric techniques and dosing, utilizing dose‑reduction software.
• Review and verify CT exam orders, radiologist protocol instructions, and patient identification in accordance with hospital policy to ensure the correct exam is performed on the correct patient.
• Assess patient risk via interview and chart review; alert nurses and/or physicians to possible contraindications for procedure (labs, allergies, etc.).
• Ensure patient is prepared and radiologist‑ordered protocols for pre‑medications have been completed (e.g., contrast allergy pre‑medication).
• Assess patient’s need for care following contrast administration; arrange renal function tests and follow‑up per radiologist protocol; instruct patients to withhold medication (e.g., metformin) per protocol.
• Provide education to patient and family members and assess understanding.
• Provide for the physical and psychological needs of patients during CT exams, including monitoring of oxygen saturation levels when caring for patients with orders for continuous O₂ sat monitoring; address issues per hospital protocol; assess pain level and notify nurse/provider as needed.
• Perform venipuncture for contrast administration; evaluate patency of IV access; administer saline flush per protocol pre/post IV contrast administration.
• Perform point‑of‑care lab tests for evaluating renal function prior to contrast administration.
• Prepare and administer oral and/or IV contrast per department protocols as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
• Ensure personnel caring for patient follow safety procedures (e.g., infection prevention).
• Document clinical and required regulatory information in patient’s electronic chart (e.g., IV documentation, signs/symptoms relevant to exam, contrast administration in MAR); perform order entry/modification/cancellation in accordance with hospital policies.
• Initiate response to complications and emergencies arising during exams; request assistance from nurses, providers, and other personnel as needed.
• Demonstrate extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and effects of disease processes; evaluate images, recognize normal versus abnormal anatomy, and notify the appropriate radiologist as needed.
• Handle and secure medications and equipment in accordance with hospital policies.
• Utilize the image management system; acquire, format, manipulate, and archive images to the PACS system.
• Assist physicians and residents as required with CT‑guided exams/procedures using aseptic technique as needed.
• Assist patient with completing informed consent form after provider has completed informed consent discussion.
• Implement downtime procedures (manual operations) when computer systems or equipment fail.
• Instruct new staff and students in CT procedures and techniques.
• Perform competency evaluations for new CT personnel.
• Assist with education and training of medical staff (radiology residents, fellows, RPA's, etc.).
• Maintain equipment and room in proper working condition and troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment; take appropriate action to address image quality issues; perform quality control procedures.
• Demonstrate and promote a healthy work environment and good teamwork; make suggestions for improvements; promote patient and family‑centered care behaviors.
• Assist in organizing workflow utilizing available staff and rooms.
• Assist in performing exams identified for approved IRB research.
• Assist in coordinating and participate in departmental continuing education in‑services.
• Provide peer feedback for staff performance evaluations.
• Perform various clerical duties and complete additional duties/projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Completion of a formal educational Radiologic Technology program accredited by a mechanism acceptable to the ARRT.
• Currently certified with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Maintains minimum CEU credits as mandated by the ARRT.
• Possess CT certification (ARRT).
• Possess current CPR certification or obtain within 6 months of employment.

• Operation of CT scanning systems, related anatomy/pathology; ability to perform CT examinations, venipuncture and contrast administration; ability to work effectively with others and provide patients an exceptionally positive experience.
