Job summary

Village Animal Hospital in the Lexington area is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians and technicians with patient care, anesthesia monitoring, and lab work.

You will assist with exams, prepare prescriptions, manage inventory, educate clients, and help with surgeries. Weekend availability, basic math for dosages, and good communication are essential; prior veterinary experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Ability to work on weekends as required.
• Previous veterinary experience preferred.
• Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; assist with heavier lifts with help.
• Familiarity with PPE and OSHA safety techniques.
• Basic math for medication dosages.
• Basic computer skills and MS Office familiarity.
• Strong communication to ensure patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment.
• Monitor hospitalized pets and manage routine in-house labs.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs during procedures.
• Obtain samples and perform in-hospital lab work; prepare specimens for outside labs.
• Take and develop radiographs following safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restraining during exams.
• Administer medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments as directed.
• Restock exam and lab areas; maintain cleanliness and equipment.
• Educate clients regarding veterinary care and procedures.
