Compass Activities Guide SUMMARY

The Compass Activities Guide provides exceptional service, professionalism, and hospitality while creating memorable experiences for guests and members of Palmetto Bluff. This position is responsible for leading and facilitating a variety of recreational, educational, and revenue-generating activities while supporting the department's goals and maintaining Montage International standards. The Compass Activities Guide serves as an ambassador of Palmetto Bluff, sharing knowledge of the property's natural resources, cultural history, recreational opportunities, and unique sense of place. This role is responsible for safely guiding activities, delivering engaging guest experiences, and ensuring operational excellence across all Compass programs. Activities may include, but are not limited to, Duffy Boat Tours, bike tours, architecture tours, archery programs, support naturalist programming, children's activities, family experiences, special events, and seasonal programming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Guide and facilitate a variety of recreational, educational, and outdoor experiences for members and guests.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service through personalized and engaging guest interactions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Palmetto Bluff, the May River estuary, Lowcountry ecology, local wildlife, Gullah Geechee culture and history, and regional points of interest.
  • Assist guests with activity reservations, equipment rentals, and general recreation inquiries.
  • Conduct activities in a safe, professional, and engaging manner while adhering to all departmental standards and safety procedures.
  • Assist with setup, operation, and breakdown of daily activities and special events.
  • Maintain activity equipment and report maintenance or safety concerns to management.
  • Support children's programming, holiday events, member events, and seasonal experiences.
  • Ensure all equipment, facilities, and activity areas are maintained in a clean, organized, and guest-ready condition.
  • Provide guests with accurate information regarding resort amenities, dining outlets, activities, and local attractions.
  • Assist in developing and implementing new experiences and recreational programming that enhance guest engagement and drive revenue.
  • Build strong relationships with Concierge, Front Office, Guest Services, and other resort departments to promote activities and create seamless guest experiences.
  • Attend all required training sessions, meetings, and departmental events.
  • Uphold Montage International service standards and represent the Compass Department with professionalism at all times.
SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS
  • Serve as a role model for personalized guest service.
  • Assist with training and onboarding new associates.
  • Promote resort activities and experiences to guests and members.
  • Maintain current knowledge of local events, community happenings, and seasonal offerings.
  • Support departmental initiatives designed to increase participation and revenue.
  • Assist management with operational projects and special assignments as needed.
  • Support other resort departments during peak business periods and special events.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong passion for outdoor recreation, hospitality, and guest engagement.
  • Knowledge of Palmetto Bluff, Lowcountry ecosystems, wildlife, waterways, and local history preferred.
  • Ability to lead activities in a confident, engaging, and professional manner.
  • Comfortable speaking to individuals and groups of varying sizes.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team‑focused environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with guests, members, and fellow associates.
  • Ability to research and assist in developing new recreational programming and guest experiences.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
  • Ability to maintain Montage International grooming and service standards.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One to two years of experience in recreation, hospitality, tourism, outdoor education, guiding, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working in a luxury hospitality environment is preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required or ability to obtain certification within an established timeframe.
  • Additional certifications related to boating, archery, outdoor recreation, or interpretive programming are desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with regular exposure to weather conditions.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, frequently up to four hours or more at a time.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to push, pull, and move equipment and carts weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, and reach while performing activity and equipment‑related duties.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the year.
  • Must be capable of safely participating in and demonstrating recreational activities including cycling, boating, archery, walking tours, and other outdoor experiences.
  • Requires manual dexterity, visual acuity, hearing, and verbal communication necessary to safely conduct activities and interact with guests.
