Job summary

A community health organization in Clinton is seeking a Community Health Group Exercise Instructor to lead engaging group fitness classes and support overall wellness in the community. POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Health Group Exercise Instructor leads inclusive, high-quality group fitness and evidence-based health programs that support chronic disease prevention and overall wellness. This role strengthens community health by creating welcoming environments where individuals of all backgrounds and abilities can improve their physical, emotional, and social well-being. Through mission-driven programming and relationship-building, the instructor helps remove barriers to healthy living and advances the YMCA’s commitment to serving all.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist with leading energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Follow the Community Health program format.
  • Offer exercises suited to the population, monitor progression, and offer modifications.
  • Assist with program evaluations at the beginning and the end of the program or within the necessary requirements for assessments (for MFBB, EF and Livestrong programs).
  • Have knowledge of how to use all equipment provided in the Wellness Area.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with members; help members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Keep accurate class attendance records.
  • Assess participants and assist with correcting form during class.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment and inform the Director of any breakage or items needing replacement.
  • Report to work 5 minutes prior to class to prepare for class and ensure proper set up and tear down of class.
  • Be responsible for covering their class. Any substitutes should be called into their Director/Coordinator.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures; respond to emergency situations.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, Group Exercise Certification (or within 90 days of being hired).
  • Successfully complete the program training(s) upon being hired.
  • Experience of instructing group exercise-based classes.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to conduct classes and activities.
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position that includes leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
YMCA SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
  • CPR & First Aid – Must be able to complete and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid; able to assist individuals in need until professional help arrives.
  • Emergency Response – Ability to quickly identify emergency situations (medical, fire, environmental, etc.) and respond appropriately following established procedures.
  • Incident Management – Required to report all safety incidents and hazards immediately and accurately to supervisors.
  • Safe Environment – Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and hazard-free environment for all staff, members, and participants.
  • Physical Readiness – Must be able to perform physical tasks related to safety, including assisting individuals of various ages and physical abilities.
  • Compliance – Follow all YMCA safety protocols, OSHA standards, and state/local regulations as applicable.
