Community Health Aide, Trainee, I, II, III, IV, Practitioner - St. Paul, Alaska Health Center

The Southcentral Foundation (SCF) Community Health Aide is responsible for providing acute, chronic, emergency, and preventive medical health care to Village residents under the direction of medical doctors in Anchorage and according to the CHA/P Manual. The CHA Trainee (CHA-T) level is a training classification for those who do not yet qualify as CHA I. The CHA I, II, III, IV, and Practitioner are expected to operate within the guidelines of the CHA/P Manual and their level of training and scope of practice. CHA II, III, IV, and Practitioner are also expected to act within the limits of their Standing Orders (SO) when applicable.

Qualifications:

SCF programs serve primarily Alaska Native people affiliated with Cook Inlet Region, Inc. (CIRI) and other Alaska Native and American Indian people within SCF’s service area. Employees should understand the cultures and needs of this population to help achieve SCF’s vision of wellness and its mission of working with the Native Community to promote health and wellness.

Additional Qualifications for CHA I include:

  • Successful completion of the TABE Test at the 9th Grade level.
  • Certification as an Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) OR Emergency Medical Technician, maintained throughout employment.
  • Completion of full-time work in a Village clinic with 20 customer-owner encounters prior to Session II of the CHA Training, involving direct onsite observation, Medical Traffic Evaluation (three calls), PEF chart review (five charts or notes), and completion of the PSLN form.
  • Successful completion of Session I of the CHA training program with a grade of 80% or better.

Additional Qualifications for CHA II include:

  • Completion of Session II of the CHA training program with a grade of 80% or better.
  • 200 hours of field experience including 60 customer-owner encounters before the next training session, with direct onsite observation, Medical Traffic Evaluation, PEF chart review, and PSLN form completion.

Additional Qualifications for CHA III include:

  • Completion of Session III of the CHA training program with a grade of 80% or better.
  • 200 hours of field experience, including 60 customer-owner encounters, prior to the next training session, with direct onsite observation, Medical Traffic Evaluation, PEF chart review, and PSLN form completion.
  • Application for certification after completing required field training.
  • Current certification by the CHA Program Certification Board (CHAPCB).

Additional Qualifications for CHA IV include:

  • Completion of Session IV of the CHA training program with a grade of 80% or better.
  • Additional 200 hours of field experience, including 60 customer-owner encounters or alternatives approved by the Supervisor, with direct onsite observation, Medical Traffic Evaluation, PEF chart review, and PSLN form completion.
  • Current certification by the CHA Program Certification Board (CHAPCB), Level IV.

Additional Qualifications for CHA Practitioner include:

  • Successful completion of a preceptorship with at least 30 hours of direct customer-owner care, performing at least 15 encounters as primary provider.
  • Credentialing as a CHP with the training center per guidelines.
  • Complete 48 hours of approved Continuing Education every two years after credentialing.
  • Preceptorship and re-credentialing every six years.
  • Current certification as a Practitioner by the CHA Program Certification Board (CHAPCB).

Employee Health Requirements:

Compliance with Employee Health Procedures is mandatory. Job-related health screening and immunizations must be completed before employment, including MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Influenza, T-dap, and COVID-19 vaccinations.
