916 Ink in Sacramento seeks a Community Engagement and Communications VISTA to expand literacy access for low-income youth by building sustainable outreach, volunteers, and partnerships. The VISTA will create templates, workflows, and documentation to help staff continue the work after the term.
The role involves developing event planning guides, recruitment materials, training staff, and tracking tools, with a focus on communications and partnerships.
916 Ink is a Sacramento youth creative writing and literacy nonprofit and not-for-profit book publisher. Since 2011, 916 Ink has published more than 8,000 youth authors in nearly 400 anthologies and supported students who are behind grade level in reading. Through culturally relevant writing, publishing, and literacy programs, 916 Ink helps young people build reading skills, vocabulary, communication, confidence, empathy, and social-emotional learning. This AmeriCorps VISTA project will address poverty by strengthening 916 Ink’s capacity to reach low-income and under-resourced youth through improved outreach systems, volunteer engagement, partnership pathways, communications infrastructure, and participation tracking. The VISTA member will not provide direct youth services; instead, the member will create sustainable systems, templates, workflows, training materials, and documentation that staff and community partners can continue using after the service term
The VISTA member will build 916 Ink’s capacity to expand literacy access for low-income and under-resourced Sacramento youth. The member will create sustainable outreach, volunteer, partnership, and communications systems rather than provide direct youth services. Activities include developing event planning guides for Young Storytellers Month, Write Nights, author events, and family literacy activities; creating volunteer role descriptions, recruitment materials, onboarding tools, and partner outreach templates; strengthening partnership pathways with schools, libraries, bookstores, authors, neighborhood groups, and youth-serving organizations; and building a communications calendar, content templates, story-collection and approval workflows, accessibility and privacy guidance, and tracking tools. The member will train staff and document procedures so the systems continue after the VISTA term.
