Job Description

This position will support immunization education efforts for Cooperative Extension audiences across the state and the western U.S. (Utah, Arizona, Hawaii, and California), with a focus on COVID-19 and influenza vaccines. The position will work to increase awareness and understanding of immunizations among the general adult population, particularly in lower-resource, rural, and medically underserved communities. A key priority is providing culturally relevant educational content in the primary languages of diverse populations across the region.

Central to this role is supporting the development of community-centered, up-to-date, science-based vaccine education materials; coordinating their dissemination in alignment with seasonal campaigns; and engaging partnerships at the local and state levels to strengthen outreach and expand impact. Occasional evening and weekend travel for events, workshops, and trainings is required, primarily within California and occasionally to other U.S. states.

Community Nutrition and Health at UC ANR is a statewide network of researchers and educators promoting healthy and equitable communities for all Californians. Our shared goal is to co-create public education and partner training programming to advance community health across California. We collaborate with local organizations and community leaders who share our goals to advance community health and work to create changes across many areas including individual behavior change, leadership capacity building, organizational policy change, informing public policy, and affecting systems or environmental change such as workflows or best practices within an institution. This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed and ends 4/30/2027 with the possibility of extension for an additional year if funding permits.

The home department is the Community Nutrition and Health. This position can be based out of the following local UCCE offices: Davis, Placer, Butte, Alameda, Santa Clara, El Dorado, Tuolumne, Calaveras, and San Joaquin. This position is eligible for hybrid flexible work arrangements for applicants living in the State of California at this time. Please note that hybrid flexible work arrangements are subject to change by the University.

Key Responsibilities

• 50% Plans and develops national and statewide immunization education programs, while continuously refining and adapting existing curricula within a continuing education setting.
  • Plans lessons using adult engagement techniques, extending education to community partners and/or program participants.
  • Recruits, trains, supports, and evaluates community organizations and representatives who act as volunteers to deliver UC‑approved curricula and activities.
  • Evaluates and adjusts programming through participant evaluations.
  • Prepares reports documenting program accomplishments.
  • Identifies and develops tools for programming such as flyers, social media messaging, and various print or virtual materials.
  • Actively participates in and leads the development of programs, partnerships, coalitions, and cross‑sector collaborations that advance mission‑driven objectives.
  • Leads efforts to disseminate positive messaging about COVID and flu vaccines intended to normalize and routinize vaccinations as part of a cyclical practice to protect families.
  • May provide language translations of class materials and/or simultaneous interpretation during classes into preferred language of participant populations, as well as develop and share culturally relevant examples to enhance effectiveness.
• 25% Leads and advances professional development initiatives for Extension professionals throughout the EXCITE Western U.S. Region.
  • Develops educational resources in collaboration with an Advisor/Academic.
  • Creates educational opportunities and content for educators to share within their existing programming.
  • Leads educators in integrating conceptual connections across curriculum topics and related community content areas.
  • Convenes a Western Region cohort or community of practice of Extension practitioners to share and learn from one another on integrating immunization education into their work.
  • Develops a replicable framework for analyzing needs assessment data, including vaccination rates, rural health indicators, and medically underserved populations.
  • Designs and delivers statewide and regional virtual and in‑person trainings for educators, creating structured opportunities for job shadowing and observation of Motivational Interviewing and related instructional demonstrations.
  • Collaborates with team members to develop annual work plans, provide recommendations for program improvement, and coach partner agencies in implementing health‑related initiatives within their organizations.
• 15% Develops and facilitates immunization‑focused community partnerships at the community, regional, and state levels to strengthen collaboration and improve public health outcomes.
  • Plans meetings with local partners (community leaders, school administrators, teachers, parent educators) to discuss immunization education opportunities for their clientele.
  • Participates in developing outreach plans to ensure all eligible racial/ethnic groups receive information about program education opportunities and are welcomed to participate with inclusive program practices.
  • Develops collaborations with other programs to coordinate outreach efforts.
  • Acts as a program ambassador across the state and at community events, representing the program and strengthening relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Maintains appropriate records to track partnership activities, collaborations, and related community events.
  • Engages with state and local Department of Public Health contacts to stay up‑to‑date on available resources/regulations and availability of vaccines in those states.
  • Identifies additional adult immunization topics to prioritize and address within local communities (e.g., MMR, HPV, RSV).
  • Evaluates community perspectives to identify key barriers, concerns, opportunities, and strengths that inform educational priorities.
• 10% Engages in personal professional development, scholarship, program evaluation, and reporting.
  • Co‑leads needs assessment and evaluation activities on a cyclical basis to continually inform program improvement and stay relevant with community input.
  • Leverages health equity and other public health frameworks to undergird vaccine education efforts, documenting the impact of social ecological model approaches that interlace individual, community, and societal interventions.

Requirements

• Associate degree in Public Health, Health Science, Adult Education, or other relevant field and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Thorough experience in community education, community engagement, teaching and/or facilitation best practices.
• Experience working with underserved populations.
• Experience and skills in delivering educational programs.
• Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
• Proficiency in Windows‑based computers with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Working knowledge of conducting needs assessments to understand community strengths, interests, and priorities.
• Experience working with diverse adult and/or volunteer groups, including diversity in age, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability.

Preferred Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Science, Adult Education, or other relevant field.
• Bilingual communication/translation abilities in English and Spanish, Hmong, Mandarin, Vietnamese, or other language spoken in the community.
