Job summary

The National Ability Center in Park City, Utah, is seeking a part-time Community and Transition Program Assistant to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through community-based programming, employment support, and transition services.

The role involves facilitating recreation and life skills activities, transportation support, and building independence and social connections within a collaborative team.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Experience working with adults with developmental disabilities.
• Current First Aid and CPR certification, or the ability to obtain.
• Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record.
• Be able to maintain a Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) physical.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. We do not sponsor employment visas or other immigration processes to attain or maintain employment eligibility.

Responsibilities

• Support supervision, training, scheduling, and mentoring of interns, volunteers, and transition programming.
• Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, staff, participants, and supervisor daily.
• Role-model and teach social, hygiene, self-advocacy, independence, and workplace skills.
• Report accidents, incidents, and disciplinary concerns to supervisor.
• Utilize behavior management techniques as needed.
• Maintain documentation and record keeping (progress notes, incident reports, etc.).
• Assist with facilities, equipment, and supplies usage.
• Assist with site, equipment, and vehicle prep/cleanup.
• Assist with fundraising events and act as NAC ambassador.

Job Summary:

The Community and Transition Program Assistant supports the implementation of community and transition programming for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including transportation to and from program activities. Programming focuses on developing independent living, employment, recreation, and social skills while fostering meaningful community engagement.

This is a part-time, seasonal position for the fall, winter, and spring, typically consisting of 2-3 days per week depending on programming needs. The position includes planned program breaks during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and most of April. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required to support special events or programming needs. This position is not eligible for remote work.

Essential Duties:

• Support the supervision, training, scheduling, and mentoring of COACH interns, supported volunteers, and PCALL and transition programming.
• Work with and communicate effectively with parents/guardians, staff, participants, and program supervisor/manager daily.
• Role-model and teach skills in socialization, hygiene, self-advocacy, independence, and workplace skills etc.
• Report all accidents, incidents, and disciplinary concerns to the program supervisor/manager.
• Utilize behavior management techniques as needed.
• Maintain documentation and record keeping (progress notes, daily "report cards", incident reports, behavior plans, etc.).
• Assist with overseeing proper usage of facilities, equipment, and supplies.
• Assist with preparing/cleaning site, equipment, and vehicles for activities.
• Assist with key fundraising events and other special events as needed to help advance program goals and support; serve as an ambassador and representative for the National Ability Center.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Experience working with adults with developmental disabilities.
• Current First Aid and CPR certification, or the ability to obtain.
• Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience as a camp counselor or experience working in adaptive recreation for people with disabilities.
• Ability to speak Spanish and/or use American Sign Language (ASL).
• Experience job coaching people with disabilities.
• Bachelor’s Degree or working towards a degree in Special Education, Recreation Therapy, or related field of study.

• Knowledge of a variety of disabilities and ability to communicate effectively and connect with participants and their families.
• Ability to instruct activities such as archery, cycling, water sports, and indoor rock climbing.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate multiple responsibilities and shifting priorities in a quick-paced environment.
• Ability to prioritize work effectively and efficiently under pressure.Ability to adapt and use innovative solutions to provide personalized experiences for every participant based on their individual needs and goals.
• Outstanding organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to support program needs with a proactive and solution-oriented initiative.
• Proficiency in basic computer programs such as MS Office.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to work productively and collaboratively within a team.

Working Conditions:

• Ability to lift and maneuver equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. while supporting on programs.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors while running programming activities in various weather conditions, including extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to drive a 15-passenger vehicle.
• Available and willing to work a non-traditional schedule that may include occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially as needed for projects and special events including July 4th.
