Communications Technician

The Communications Technician is responsible for the planning, layout, and complete installation of new and retrofit communications equipment and systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards for a particular project. This includes conducting site surveys, pulling cable, terminating and testing both copper and fiber optic cable, installing ancillary communications systems, and ensuring safety, quality, production, and schedule requirements are met.

Responsibilities
  • Extensive experience with installation, termination, and testing of Structured Cable Plant in commercial environments, including hospital or airport installs.
  • Knowledge of BICSI guidelines for proper install and termination procedures.
  • Provide own hand tools.
  • Train and supervise apprentices in a team environment while facilitating cabling and electronics installation.
  • Maintain safety, quality, production, and schedule standards.
  • Consistently report to work on time and work well with other employees to accomplish common goals.
  • Wear safety equipment provided (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, safety vest) and personal protective gear (long pants, 4‑inch sleeve shirt, safety‑toed boots).
  • Install category‑rated copper and fiber optic cable.
  • Terminate and test horizontal copper cabling.
  • Terminate fiber optic cable via anaerobic, mechanical, and fusion splicing.
  • Terminate and splice copper riser cable.
  • Install panels, enclosures, electronics, and labels for communications systems.
  • Install interior conduit, surface mount raceway systems, plywood, racks, cabinets, and cable trays in communications rooms.
  • Read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Assist with outside plant installations and pull cable up to 100 pairs unassisted.
  • Install prefab assembly unassisted and participate in site cleanup.
  • Maintain clean work area.
  • Troubleshoot and repair communications cable issues.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED with 3 years of experience.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the job site.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Valid driver’s license to operate equipment (training provided).
Desired Skills
  • Willingness to work in different countries for up to 6 months a year and travel within the United States.
  • Prior experience in communications work including room build‑out, Cat6, Cat6A, fiber optic termination, interpreting and maintaining drawings and as‑builds.
  • Test, troubleshoot, and repair copper and fiber optic cabling.
  • Familiarity with BlueBeam, Fluke Versiv, and MS Office Word and Excel.

Abilities
  • Lifting, carrying, and moving objects up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Relocate a 12‑foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Work at heights up to 60 feet and climb/maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and ladders.
  • Walk, climb, lift, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull, and reach overhead routinely.
  • Good vision (may be corrected), color vision, hearing, and communication ability in English.
  • Use standard ladder without exceeding weight limits while carrying tools.
  • Recognize potential problems without necessarily solving them.
