Job description

The Asheville Art Museum, established in 1948 by artists, engages, enlightens, and inspires individuals through exhibitions and programs developed for all ages that interpret its Collection of American art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Anchoring the center of lively downtown Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Museum serves residents of the Southeast and Western North Carolina, as well as visitors from around the country and the world.

Position Description

The Communications & Marketing Manager is responsible for the strategy, execution, and evaluation of the Asheville Art Museum’s marketing and communications efforts across print, digital, social media, email, website, radio, advertising, public relations, and other promotional channels. This hands-on position develops and implements integrated campaigns supporting exhibitions, programs, events, fundraising and membership initiatives, and other institutional priorities; maintains the Museum’s brand, voice, and visual identity; and uses performance data to strengthen audience engagement, visitation, and participation. The Communications & Marketing Manager reports to the Executive Director.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the Museum’s marketing and communications strategy and integrated campaigns supporting exhibitions, programs, events, fundraising and membership initiatives, and other institutional priorities.
  • Manage communications across print, digital, social media, email, website, radio, advertising, public relations, and other channels, including the Museum’s content calendar, production schedule, and community calendars.
  • Create, edit, design, schedule, and publish social media, email, website, blog, advertising, signage, exhibition collateral, and other print and digital communications.
  • Maintain the Museum’s website, digital platforms, brand standards, visual identity, editorial style, institutional voice, and shared communications assets.
  • Develop and execute advertising strategies and manage media relations, including press releases, media inquiries, interviews, press visits, earned-media opportunities, and crisis communications.
  • Collaborate with Museum departments to identify marketing needs, establish priorities and timelines, gather content and assets, and execute effective campaigns.
  • Build and maintain relationships with tourism and hospitality organizations, arts and community partners, media outlets, and other organizations to expand awareness and cross-promotional opportunities.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators; analyze campaign, social media, website, email, advertising, audience, and engagement data; and prepare regular performance reports.
  • Manage the marketing and communications budget, external vendors, project-request processes, communications workflows, and digital assets; support Museum leadership with institutional messaging and other communications needs.
  • Coordinate and support communications committee comprised of trustees and volunteers.
  • Develop and manage the annual marketing and communications budget, including grant-funded expenditures
Special Requirements

This year-round, full-time position with benefits may require a flexible schedule, including occasional evening and weekend work. Annual compensation starts at $58,000 depending on experience, plus paid time off, health insurance, and retirement benefits after the required eligibility period. The incumbent should have a valid driver’s license, be able to traverse the Museum, handle tools or controls, and travel periodically for Museum business

Education/Experience

The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree, academic training, or equivalent professional experience in marketing, communications, public relations, digital media, graphic design, or a related field, along with 5+ years of relevant professional experience.

Candidates should have excellent writing, editing, storytelling, project management, and organizational skills; demonstrated experience developing integrated marketing campaigns; and strong social media, digital content, graphic design, and audience engagement skills. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva, WordPress or similar CMS platforms, social media management tools, email marketing, and digital analytics is highly desirable. Experience with photography, videography, media relations, advertising placement, and nonprofit, arts, museum, or tourism marketing is preferred.
