Job summary

The Alaska SeaLife Center is seeking a versatile Communications Coordinator/Manager to support our Advancement team. You will develop and manage graphic design, email marketing, website content, and promotional campaigns, while shaping clear, engaging stories about animal care, research, and education.

The role requires strong copywriting, design skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects from concept through completion, in collaboration with internal teams and external partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications, journalism, graphic design, art, media, photography, or similar field
  • 3–5 years of experience in marketing and communications
  • Experience independently managing email marketing campaigns, graphic design projects, and organizational communications.

Job description

Summary

The Communications Coordinator/Manager is an integral member of the Alaska SeaLife Center’s Advancement team, which brings together development, fundraising, marketing, and communications efforts under a cohesive strategy and centralized voice.

In this role, you will take primary responsibility for filling requests for graphic designs, email marketing, website content, and promotional campaigns for events, programs, and Advancement initiatives. In addition, you will collaborate with teams across the Center and contribute to the development of clear, engaging communications assets and stories that highlight their work in animal care, research, education, and beyond.

You will also assist with social media, photography, video production, and media relations projects as part of the broader communications team.

The ideal candidate is a versatile and collaborative communicator who can manage multiple priorities, lead projects from concept through completion, and translate complex information into clear, engaging content. We are looking for someone who is excited to support the Alaska SeaLife Center’s mission and share a genuine interest in protecting Alaska’s marine ecosystems.

Education/Training Requirements
Coordinator
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications, journalism, graphic design, art, media, photography, or similar field, as well as a demonstrated ability to communicate complex topics clearly to a broad range of audiences.
Manager
  • 3–5 years of experience in marketing and communications
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing email marketing campaigns, graphic design projects, and organizational communications.
Essential Duties
Communications and Brand Development
Coordinator
  • Creates written and visual materials for print and digital communications, including feature stories, newsletters, emails, annual reports, brochures, event materials, advertisements, promotional campaigns, and more.
  • Takes primary responsibility for graphic design and branding projects while maintaining consistency with established visual and editorial standards.
  • Produces clear, accurate, and engaging copy that is free from spelling, grammar, and factual errors.
Manager
  • Oversees and takes ownership of major communications and design projects to ensure alignment with organizational priorities and brand standards.
  • Recommends improvements to the Center’s messaging, visual identity, and communications practices using knowledge of marketing and advertising strategies.
Email, Website, and Audience Engagement
Coordinator
  • Develops and manages email marketing campaigns, including writing, design, audience selection, scheduling, distribution, and analytics, while collaborating with Advancement team members on overall email strategy.
  • Maintains the ASLC website by creating and updating written content, graphics, photographs, program information, and event details.
  • Creates and reviews digital analytics from the website, email, and social media platforms to help inform future communications and marketing strategies.
  • Maintains accurate program, visitor, and contact information across digital platforms such as Google Business Profile, Tripadvisor, Yelp, and other public listings.
  • Uses audience databases, including Altru and Greater Giving, email platforms, and other communications systems to maintain audience information, build targeted lists, and support campaign distribution and reporting.
Manager

In addition to the above,

  • Independently plans and manages email campaigns, website priorities, and audience engagement initiatives.
  • Analyzes audience and campaign performance to identify trends and recommend strategies for improving reach, engagement, and results.
  • Establishes reporting practices and performance measures for digital communications.
Marketing and Centerwide Collaboration
Coordinator
  • Works primarily with the Advancement team to develop marketing and promotional plans for events, programs, fundraising, membership, and organizational campaigns.
  • Collaborates with additional teams across the Center to understand their goals and develop communications and marketing that support animal care, research, education, visitor programs, exhibits creation, and other initiatives.
  • Supports additional Advancement activities such as event planning and preparation.
Manager

In addition to the above,

  • Manages assigned marketing campaigns and communications projects from planning through implementation and evaluation.
  • Works with department leaders to prioritize requests, establish timelines, and align projects with organizational goals.
  • Contributes to annual marketing and communications planning.
Social Media, Visual Media, and Media Relations
Coordinator
  • Assists with creating social media and blog content, engaging with followers, and monitoring social media channels while following established communications protocols.
  • Assists with photography and video projects, including capturing, organizing, editing, and preparing visual assets for communications use.
  • Assists with media relations by occasionally coordinating requests, gathering materials, and supporting media and film crew visits.
Manager

In addition to the above,

  • Manages assigned social media, photography, and video projects and helps establish content priorities.
  • Serves as a secondary point person for media relations, supporting the primary media lead and coordinating assigned media requests, materials, interviews, and visits.
  • Steps into a larger media relations role when needed while following established review and approval processes.
Project Management and Representation
Coordinator
  • Works both independently and collaboratively to manage projects, identify communications needs, make recommendations, and meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Represents the Center at meetings, events, and community activities as requested.
Manager

In addition to the above,

  • Independently manages multiple communications projects and coordinates timelines, reviews, and approvals.
  • Helps develop communications procedures, workflows, and operational best practices.
General Responsibilities
  • Maintains a valid driver’s license, travels within Alaska as needed, complies with all ASLC policies and procedures, fosters positive relationships, and performs other related duties as assigned.
Miscellaneous
  • Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Skills and Abilities
  • Strong copywriting, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Knowledge of marketing, public relations, project planning and implementation, and advertising strategies.
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills. Articulate, well-spoken individual capable of effectively representing the organization to various audiences.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and changing deadlines.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, with experience in video editing software.
  • Mac or PC literate with experience with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Flexible team player who can also work independently with minimal supervision.

Salary Range: $56,694-$61,776 (4) $65,520-$70,408 (5)
