Job summary

Mississippi Votes is seeking a Social Media Intern for Fall 2026, a paid role to help grow our Instagram and TikTok presence. You’ll create engaging content, cover events, and engage young Mississippians in civic opportunities. Training is provided; travel across the state may be required.

The internship offers hands-on experience in digital storytelling, while collaborating with the Communications Department to meet monthly content goals and adhere to brand guidelines.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at Jackson State University, Tougaloo College, Millsaps College, or Belhaven University.
• Available to work a minimum of three days per week on a consistent schedule.
• Must be willing to appear on camera.
• Familiarity with Instagram and TikTok and understanding of how young audiences use each platform.
• Interest in social media, communications, storytelling, marketing, digital organizing, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
• Be able to create content using a smartphone and be willing to learn additional content creation and editing tools.
• Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Be creative, dependable, organized, responsive to feedback, and able to meet deadlines.
• Have an interest in civic engagement and Mississippi Votes’ mission.
• Experience with Canva, CapCut, Adobe Creative Suite, photography, videography, graphic design, or video editing is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Support the management of Mississippi Votes’ TikTok and Instagram accounts.
• Create original social media content, including short-form videos, Reels, TikToks, graphics, photos, stories, and other digital assets.
• Produce a required number of approved communications assets each month, as established by the Communications Department and monthly content calendar.
• Assist with brainstorming and developing creative content that makes civic engagement, voting, organizing, and Mississippi Votes’ work accessible and engaging to young audiences.
• Identify relevant social media trends, sounds, formats, and opportunities that can be adapted appropriately for Mississippi Votes.
• Appear on camera for Mississippi Votes social media content when needed.
• Capture photos, videos, interviews, and other content at Mississippi Votes programs and events.
• Attend select community events, organizational programs, trainings, and activities to provide on-site communications and social media coverage.
• Assist with organizing and maintaining digital content and media assets.
• Support audience engagement and other social media management activities as assigned.
• Participate in regularly scheduled Communications Department trainings, content meetings, and professional development sessions.
• Follow Mississippi Votes’ communications standards, brand guidelines, messaging, and approval processes.
• Complete other communications-related assignments as needed.

Mississippi Votes is seeking a creative, energetic, and social media-savvy undergraduate student to serve as our Social Media Intern. This position will support the Communications Department in creating engaging digital content that tells the story of Mississippi Votes, highlights our programs and campaigns, and connects young Mississippians to opportunities for civic engagement.

The Social Media Intern will primarily support the management and growth of Mississippi Votes’ Instagram and TikTok platforms through content creation, short‑form video, event coverage, and audience engagement.

This is a hands‑on internship for a student who enjoys social media, understands current digital trends, is comfortable being both behind and in front of the camera, and wants to develop professional communications experience.

• Have an interest in social media, communications, storytelling, marketing, digital organizing, journalism, public relations, or a related field.

Performance Expectations

The Social Media Intern will work from an established schedule and content plan developed with the Communications Department. Interns will be expected to consistently meet monthly content‑production goals, attend required training and meetings, complete assignments by established deadlines, and maintain regular communication with their supervisor.

Because Mississippi Votes’ work happens throughout the community, some assignments may take place outside of normal office hours, including occasional evenings or weekends. Advance notice will be provided whenever possible.

Compensation

This is a paid internship at $15.00 per hour. The intern must maintain a regular schedule of at least three working days per week, with specific hours established in coordination with the Communications Department.
