Job description

Are you a skilled communicator and natural connector who enjoys building relationships, telling compelling stories, and bringing communications campaigns to life? Do you thrive on managing multiple priorities, keeping projects moving, and ensuring the right message reaches the right audience at the right time? If so, we'd love to hear from you!

Charitable nonprofits improve our lives, add vitality to our communities, contribute to our local and national economies, and enhance the health of our democracy. The National Council of Nonprofits (NCN) is the largest network of nonprofits in North America, connecting, championing, and informing organizations across the country to advance meaningful change for nonprofits and the communities they serve.

NCN is seeking a strategic, highly organized, and relationship-oriented Communications Coordinator to help strengthen engagement with our network of more than 40,000 nonprofits nationwide. In this role, you'll lead member-facing communications, manage the production and distribution of NCN newsletters, support major national initiatives such as Nonprofits Get It Done and Transformation 2035, and help translate communications strategies into coordinated campaigns that reach and engage audiences across the country.

You’ll work closely with colleagues, members, and partners to amplify nonprofit voices, create opportunities for storytelling, and ensure our communications efforts are connected, consistent, and impactful.

If you’re passionate about the nonprofit sector and excited about the opportunity to contribute to meaningful communications work at a national scale, we’d love to have you join our team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the Communications team's primary point of contact for member-facing communications, coordinating announcements, resources, and campaign materials; gathering stories and content from members and partners; and leading the production and distribution of NCN's monthly e-newsletters, including drafting, editing, assembly, approvals, and engagement tracking.
  • Support planning and execution of major campaigns, including Nonprofits Get It Done and Transformation 2035 — translating communications strategies into actionable implementation plans, developing messaging and materials, managing Days of Action communications, and ensuring all campaign components are completed on schedule.
  • Coordinate member and partner communications for NCN's national campaigns, including managing campaign emails and resources, supporting mini-grant storytelling, gathering participant stories, and amplifying member voices across NCN communications.
  • Identify web, social, digital, and graphic needs across campaigns and member communications — and coordinate those deliverables with the Communications Specialist and Creative team to keep all production components aligned, on brand, and on time.
  • Support the Vice President of Communications on key communications initiatives, including planning and coordinating editorial calendars and capacity-building programming for member communications cohorts.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of relevant communications experience, with a focus on writing, editing, and project or campaign coordination — nonprofit, member, or association communications experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact, CiviCRM, or similar) and demonstrated experience managing newsletters, organizational mailings, or audience-facing communications.
  • Strong project management skills with a proven ability to manage multiple campaigns, stakeholders, and deadlines simultaneously; familiarity with Asana or comparable project management tools and Meltwater or other media monitoring/CRM platforms preferred.
  • Degree in communications, public relations, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
Desired Attributes
  • You connect the dots — you naturally spot what members need, what campaigns are missing, and what it takes to keep communications moving forward.
  • You thrive when there are a lot of moving pieces — managing timelines, coordinating stakeholders, and keeping multiple workstreams on track energizes rather than overwhelms you.
  • You genuinely care about the nonprofit sector and the people it serves — this work matters to you personally, not just professionally.
  • You're a long-game thinker — you're looking to build something, not just fill a role until the next opportunity comes along.
Our Core Values

We are driven by our Core Values. These values guide our actions as we unite and strengthen nonprofits across the country to improve lives and enrich communities: serving others by listening and leading; getting things done, together; earning trust in everything we do; centering equity in all our work; and honoring the nonprofit workforce.

This is a full-time, hybrid position based in Washington, D.C. This is a 2-year term position, with a salary range of $90,000 - $105,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, long-term disability, and short-term disability insurance; a 401(k) plan with employer match; flexible spending accounts; generous paid time off and holiday schedule; monthly transportation and communications stipends; and ongoing professional development opportunities.
